Am I reading it correctly that when it they're stating how many years a player has been in the league they count Rookie, then year 1, 2 etc.

If so, why not count the Rookie year as the first year and continue counting the following as 2, 3, etc?

What does the rookie year mean if not the person's first year in the league?

Because it's how many seasons a player ALREADY has played. If it's the player's first season, they are categorized a "rookie" or "R" because they have not yet played a season.

If it's the player's second season, they have ONE year of experience, the previous "rookie" season.

They don't count the rookie season as 1 because especially going into the season when no games have yet been played, rookies have not played a season yet.
