Crazy extension. New Orleans is making some moves - picking up Peja, Chandler, Bobby Jackson - for so much money for such dubious players... there are signs of some seriously bad GMing there.
They're choking Chris Paul's future.

DraftExpress - David West will ink a five-year extension with the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, a league source confirmed to DraftExpress.com's Jonathan Givony on Monday.
He will play for 2 million dollars in the last year of his rookie contract this season. The league source indicated that his extension is worth over 45 million dollars. Hornets GM Jeff Bower and West's agent Lance Young of Octagon had until Tuesday to come to terms on the extension.
West, the #18 pick in the 2003 draft, had a breakout season last year with the Hornets, averaging 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds.

^ Don't know about that.
He's made the leap and should continue to improve I'd expect around 19ppg 8.5rpg next year a contract of $45M over 5 years seems fair. If he adds better post up game to complement his mid range jumper theres no reason he can't be a 20 point scorer and from a big thats worth paying for.
Agreed on Peja/Chandler/Jackson though, not good trades/signings. I understand the Peja signing, transition 3s and kickouts from paul but they still over paid.
At least they're showing a commitment to winning NOW, versus building slowly and being crappy for a long time. Yeah they might have paid a premium for Peja and Jackson but those are solid additions to a decent core of players. Look what CP3 had to play with last year and still how far they got. Imagine what he'll do with this group of clearly more talented players.
And David West was a big part of their success last year, though I don't think his mid-range jumper is a secret anymore and I think he'll be guarded more closely now. So I don't know about an increase in production, but he'll be solid nonetheless.
They are throwing a lot of money on long term contracts for players who don't have it and never really did (Peja), a wildly overpaid injury-prone young center (Chandler), a injury-prone back-up PG on his last legs (Jackson), and now they give way too much money to a one-year wonder. If David West keeps it up, he's still a 17/7 guy who's benefited largely from playing next to Chris Paul. They've already boxed themselves in. They've said, "This is the team we think can compete in the playoffs." And it's not a very good team.
As for paying West so much: you don't pay for the player you'd like a guy to be or become. You pay for what a player is at the moment.
Spurs didn't do that with Parker, he got paid in advance... worked out well.
You can't just let young talent go. They become your franchise.
