Struggling Timberwolves fire head coach Casey
    ESPN.com news services

Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Dwane Casey was fired Tuesday, ESPN's Ric Bucher reported, halfway into another season mired in mediocrity.

Assistant coach Randy Wittman will take over the head coaching duties.

The Timberwolves are 20-20 and currently in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Casey was hired by the Timberwolves on June 17, 2005. Longtime coach Flip Saunders was fired during the 2004-05 season and vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale filled in for the remainder of that season.

Minnesota was 33-49 last year in Casey's first season.

Wittman spent a total of nine seasons with Minnesota, also serving as an assistant coach from 1994-95 to 1998-99. He served as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers for two seasons, compiling a 62-102 record (.378) from 1999-2001. Prior to his first stint in Minnesota, Wittman spent one season each as an assistant coach with Indiana (1992-93) and Dallas (1993-94).

McHale is the worst GM in the entire NBA, and by a wide margin.

Shii-ii-ii--ii-ii-it, with a .500 record, Dwane Casey should have gotten a pay raise. McHale has given him almost nothing to work with. Before this four game skid, they were playing hard and getting some impressive wins.

Agreed. It was actually looking like they were getting comfortable in their roles, and getting some nice wins. They had won 10 of 13 (including 4 overtime wins over Detroit, Spurs, Rockets and Sixers) before the last 4 game losing streak ... and the last loss was without Garnett.

wrong person was fired; McHale should be fired. How he is still a GM in this league is beyond me...and he had the nerve to fire a man who had that squad over achieving. horse caca.

Agreed with all of you. McHale should fire his dam self.

Who is the back-up center on that team?

Why don't they have one true small forward on the team?

Why are there four point guards, plus two more 6-3 shooting guards?

How's Ndudi Ebi doing? Why didn't they keep Brandon Roy? Why didn't they draft Rudy Gay?

That is one of the most poorly assembled teams in the league.

McHale is a huge moron. Duane Casey didn't do the best job in the world. But, all things considered looking at that roster, .500 was a major accomplishment.

Oh yeah, by the way, Mr. McHale, YES, you traded Sam Cassell AND A FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK for Marko Jaric. That was not a nightmare. You really did that.

Casey was doing a good job for the team that they have. the players that they put around KG arent that great. maybe with the exception of ricky davis, who i dont think is that good, and really the only other player i like on that team is mike james, who they are probably overpaying. the players on that team are making Garnett look like ,he MUST get out of Minnesota
