National Basketball Association players who fake fouls might soon be penalized themselves, a league official said.
The NBA is studying how often feigned fouls, known as "flops," occur and whether officials can consistently tell the difference between actual fouls and embellishments, said Stu Jackson, the executive vice president for basketball operations.
"They're really difficult to determine in real time. They're meant to fool an official," Jackson told reporters today. "Are we going to be wrong more times than not? It's tough, but we're looking at it."

FIBA, the governing body for international basketball, allows referees to impose a technical foul for flopping, a penalty that Jackson said the NBA is considering. Other sports, including soccer and hockey, also allow officials to penalize players who embellish fouls.
"We have so many more plays than you do in a football or soccer game and in a more intimate environment," said Jackson, who didn't offer a timetable for a decision.
Jackson met with reporters in New York to discuss the league's officiating program.

i read they were gonna do that, their gonna give tech out too.
nobody pays attention to kings fans...haha, j/k fillmoe, i'm playing halo right now so nba ball is not getting my undivided attention until tipoff
the first halo was ten times better than the second.....
If that is the case, Ginobili is liable to pass Rasheed Wallace as the league leader in technical fouls, and, well, that's just not good for the NBA. The face of the Big T needs to be a big, round, thugish one with messed up teeth spaced like a jack 'o lantern. Not the symbolic face of South American expansion.
Stern should reconsider.
I don't think it should be a technical. Just rather a defensive foul for blocking.
I would rather them change the rule o a tactic Wade has made popular. How can it be a defensive foul when you just straight up, and the offensive players jumps into the guy in the air? I'm not sure but in college it's an offensive foul.
no more of dat richard hamilton
That means Wade won't be flashy no more. YES!!!
And no more of Dirk "rolling his ankle" on Tim Duncan's foot.
Raja would be the only Suns susceptible to this new rule if it goes into effect. He draws some legit charges but at least 60% of them are embellished.
Devin Harris oftentimes also get away with that tactic. Just my personal observation.

LOL........ I hate that........... Wade, kobe and a few others will get to the line a lot less....... And rightly so...... You lean in and the foul should be on you........
