Prince is a great performer and a great guitarist but an underrated actor. Purple Rain is the greatest movie of the 80s.
What are you, stuck in 1996? I haven't bought a CD since 1997. I don't even own a CD player except on my Computers.
Seriously though, I stopped buying his CD's when he stopped calling himself Prince...mainly because they sucked after that.
I think I read somewhere that the whole thing with no longer calling himself Prince had to do with a record deal he wanted out of...he wouldn't use his name, he pretty much disappeared from the music scene, and the music he made was absolutely the worst of his career...
Amazingly right when that record deal ended, he changed his name back to Prince and started raising his profile again...make of that what you will.
I've heard some good things about his newest album...I might check it out.
I'm not a real big fan of all the music he does, without a doubt he's a musical genius and probably the greatest American born musician....but the reason I like him is because he's awesome live. I didn't like him in higschool until I saw him in concert...and came away thinking he was probably the best guitar player I have ever seen live...
Then I found out that he played all the instruments, composed all the songs, and produced all of his own albums...doesn't matter how he dresses, guy is a genius musician and showman, and vocalist, and songwriter. IMO, he's the greatest American Born Musician...just ahead of Brian Wilson.
When I heard him play the foofighters song, my first thought wasn't that he was playing their song, my first thought was that he probably wrote that song...because he's always written songs for other artists and no one realizes he's the one that writes them. Dude wrote a song for Mitch Ryder...how the does that connection happen?

The young kids don't dig prince, I can testify to that. The 20-30 year olds really don't have any idea who he is. The 40 and over think he's lame. At least the ones who know good music. This is supposed to be Football, A Man sport?

Played all the instruments, wrote and arranged all the songs, sang all the vocals, produced the albums...while he was writing, producing, and playing as a session musician and backup vocalist for about half the musicians in the 1980's...often recieving no credit on the album(by his own request). Some of those other artists he also pretty much created their visual look...
He's definitely a genius and there aren't many American artists that can compete with him.
The sick thing is, I don't think guitar is his main instrument...I think piano and keyboards are.
