Clifford Robinson of the Golden State Warriors was suspended for five games without pay Tuesday for violating the NBA's drug policy.

Robinson's suspension begins with Wednesday night's game against the Sacramento Kings, and he is eligible to return Feb. 11 against New Orleans.

A 16-year veteran, Robinson averaged 8.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in 40 games this season.

Robinson was limited to five minutes in a 96-85 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night and had missed the previous four games because of stiffness in his lower back.

While with the Phoenix Suns in 2001, Robinson was suspended one game by the NBA after his DUI arrest in Scottsdale, Ariz. He also was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Robinson won the NBA's Sixth Man Award in 1993 after averaging 19.1 points and 6.6 rebounds with the Portland Trail Blazers. He earned a berth on the Western Conference All-Star team in 1994 with Portland.

The suspension further weakens the Warriors up front as forward Troy Murphy is sidelined with a fractured left thumb suffered Friday against Seattle.

Information from The Associated Press and SportsTicker was used in this report.
