Dirk Done Before MVP Given? - Marc Stein

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/dailyd...ilydime-070501

The NBA announced Sunday -- hours before Dallas' 103-99 Game 4 loss to Golden State -- that its awards schedule for the coming week does NOT include an MVP ceremony.

The next three awards presentations, as announced via e-mail Sunday:

The league's All-Defensive Team, as voted on by the coaches, will be released Monday ... followed by Rookie of the Year on Wednesday ... and then the NBA's Sportsmanship Award on Thursday.

    MVP?

If Dirk Nowitzki wins it, as widely expected, it appears he won't receive it before May 7 at the earliest.

Dallas must win its next three games, including Thursday's Game 6, to still be playing on May 7.

    ------

Dirk for MVP? Yeah right. This means, there will be no awarding tonight in Dallas.

The regular season MVP award is pathetically insignificant and meaningless. Who cares if you lead your team to the best record in the regular season if you can't lead it beyond that through to the very end, ie. the championship? As DAL has shown, having the best record in the regular season is going to turn out to be an empty accomplishment which means Dirk's winning of the MVP award (if he wins) will be as well. There should be one award for the entire season. You don't lead your team during crunch time/when it counts, ie. the playoffs, and through on to the championship, you don't deserve the "best player this season" label. It's as simple as that.
