I great pitcher will still win games on a bad team, whereas a mediocre pitcher will not.
The stat had some functionality and meaning as late as the 70's, when starting pitchers would roll up pretty good numbers in the complete games category. But with the near extinction of the complete game, the stat has no meaning whatsoever, as far as I'm concerned.
