If a pitcher leaves the game up 5-4, and then his team scores three runs to go up 8-4, and wins 8-7, he gets a win.

If a pitcher leaves the game up 5-4, but then his team falls behind 6-5 but rallies to win 8-7, he gets no decision.

This is but one example of the arcane rules behind awarding pitching wins that degrade the stat into oblivion. It's so 19th century.

Wins mean little. A mediocre pitcher on a great offensive team can rack up 15 wins easily.
The stat had some functionality and meaning as late as the 70's, when starting pitchers would roll up pretty good numbers in the complete games category. But with the near extinction of the complete game, the stat has no meaning whatsoever, as far as I'm concerned.

The best stat to determine a pitcher's worth are his wins in comparison to his fellow pitchers on his team.

I great pitcher will still win games on a bad team, whereas a mediocre pitcher will not.

the only time wins were overrated was in 2000, when Garret Stephenson won 15 games for the Cardinals.

Easily one of the worst 15 game winners in the history of baseball.
