Well, New Era didn't seem to put up much of a fight.

Frankly, I'm chalking this up to a misguided attempt at style (as are most New Era fashion caps nowadays) and not "specifically marketing them to gangs."

Do you think Texas State University is "specifically marketing" to the Texas Syndicate? Initial designs of the State logo were an intertwined "TS" as is the logo for the Texas Syndicate.

    right now? no

New Era is selling a product specifically geared towards GANGS. They're condoning gang affiliation and supporting it by creating GANG APPARREL!!
and this is not some hidden meaning like the ad with african american sprinters....

    "Condoning gang affiliation?"

Is New Era condoning military involvement with its camouflage line of New Era caps?

    that's just a happy coincidence

New Era was already tapped into the "urban youth culture". they know what the meaning of these three caps are and they may play the "we didnt intend for people to interpret them this way" card, but that is BULL . They should discontinue manufacture of these hats and send any profits made on them to inner city schools and issue an apology for being such inconsiderate ups who already put out a ty product but had to go that one step lower just to sell a few more caps. Yeah there's lots of gang members in the US, New Era knew that, hence the demographic they're trying to reach with these abominations

Crips, Bloods out of MLB hat lineup

NEW YORK -- A lineup of team logo baseball caps denounced as tailor-made for gang members was ordered removed from store shelves by its manufacturer Friday after complaints from baseball officials.

"It has been brought to our attention that some combinations of icons and colors on a select number of our caps could be too closely perceived to be in association with gangs," said Christopher H. Koch, CEO of New Era Cap. "In response, we, along with Major League Baseball, have pulled those caps."

The three styles in question used colors and symbols linked to three gangs: an all-white cap with a blue bandanna, the trademark of the notorious Crips; an all-white cap with a red bandanna worn by the rival Bloods; and a black cap with a gold team logo and an embroidered crown, a symbol favored by the Latin Kings.

"We encouraged and now fully support the decision of cap manufacturer New Era to pull these caps and any others that feature offensive or concerning symbols," read an MLB statement.

The New York Yankees had joined an anti-gang group, Peace on the Street, in denouncing the hats.

Both MLB and the Yankees insisted they were unaware of the symbolism in the cap designs, with the New York team noting they were never given a chance to review the new hats until they were already for sale.

The team was "completely unaware that caps with gang-related logos and colors had been manufactured with the New York Yankees logo on them," said a Yankees statement. "The New York Yankees oppose any garment that may be associated with gangs or gang-related activity."

On Thursday, protesters demonstrated about the new caps outside several Manhattan stores carrying the merchandise. The stores were selling a version of the hats bearing the familiar interlocking "NY" logo of the Yankees.

Richard Garcia, a karate instructor who works with Peace on the Street to provide youngsters with alternatives to gangs, said he immediately recognized the hats' colors from his work with former gang members.

"My fear was that the wrong kid was going to wear the wrong hat in the wrong neighborhood and get hurt," he said.

New Era said it would increase its efforts to ensure it had a better working knowledge of gang symbols, names and locations.(ppffffffffftttttttttt BULL ) The Buffalo-based company has produced hats for Major League Baseball since the 1930s.

ok, i feel you, maybe New Era doesnt "condone gang affiliation" but they sure as are making it seem OK to "represent your gang affiliation"

like you said, they have alot of misguided attempts at fashion.. but these three caps go beyond that. I understand that they are going to SAY they didnt know.. but you and I know that Tpark is the only person living in the US that doesnt know what these colors signify. and it's not just the colors... it's the apperance of colored bandanas around the caps that makes it so unmistakable. There is no room for error in interpreting that, none whatsoever

no, that is the gangs choice to wear those... those logos were around long before the prevalence of gangs. these caps were just recently designed

Yeah, cause their press release, and attatched advertising indicates that.

naturally they are not going to come out and say this. they put these caps out, knowing who will be the primary purchasers of them, then cut and run and say well we didnt knoooow!!! when people become rightfully outraged by it

oh god..... tpark, let me slow things down for you... the crips have been using the blue bandana to mark their affiliation since the inception of the gang.. bloods have used the red bandana to mark theirs. It's just always been.

New Era knows this and also knows that their main demographic is the "urban youth culture". The "urban youth culture" also happens to be heavily involved in gang membership. this is obviously, undoubtedly, undeniably a product meant for members of those gangs or wannabes that think gang life is cool. New Era could not and would not tell this to the public because they would not be allowed to sell them.

and seriously, you're the only one that doesnt know about the colors of bloods and crips
