I knew the second half against TCU was too good to be true. It's back to heavy doses of swing passes and a running game that consists of nothing but counters and the occasional bull option thrown in just for fun. Is there something in the rules against lining up under center and actually running the damn ball? Or is it written that counters from the shotgun are the only way to go?

I wouldn't feel so bad if the defense wasn't making the bull UCF quarterback look like week 1 Romo.

Just ONCE I want to see them pump fake that swing pass after throwing it over and over and have the receiver run deep. The defense would never see it coming because no defense ever has from this offense. The receiver wouldn't just be open, he'd be Plaxico Burress against Roy Williams open.

Finally, the final piece of the puzzle missing from this years UT team to this point - the Jamaal Charles fumble. Even better, the Jamaal Charles goal line fumble.

Colt McCoy has gone downhill ever since he started wearing those stupid longhorn black patches under his eyes.

    Dreary performance for the Horns
Texas has its work cut out for it

ORLANDO, Fla. — As a word of caution for all those edgy Longhorn fans, look on the bright side.

There's not a more prepared college football team in the country at recovering onside kicks than Texas.

Jamaal Charles rambled for 153 yards against Central Florida, but his fumble late in the game gave the Knights a chance to open their new stadium with a stunning upset.

At just about everything else, the sixth-ranked Longhorns look as ordinary as leftover meat loaf. Fortunately, they won't be penalized for that, and the record that shows them as the luckiest 3-0 team in America.

And forget all that crabbing in this spot about the team's pitiful strength of schedule. The schedule is just fine.

Texas sure doesn't need any more stout compe ion, and I'm personally looking into a way to get that nasty Oklahoma team off the schedule in October. There's got to be a loophole somewhere. Should have asked Miles Brand, the NCAA president on hand here for the christening of Bright House Networks Stadium, to tack on a Sooners forfeit next month to their recent probation.

Short of that, the Longhorns had better start killing the Sooners with kindness. Same for the Cornhuskers and Aggies.

Thankfully, the one with the most realistic assessment of the grim situation was Mack Brown, who is only too aware of how a 35-32 cliff-hanger of a win over 19-point underdog Central Florida will be perceived. Pretty much everyone else in burnt orange is in denial.

Of course, it may not be a cliff that fans are interested in hanging. Not after seeing such a spotty effort from a Texas team that is supposed to contend for a national championship. With all the arrests off the field, you'd think Longhorn faithful could feel good about the on-the-field stuff.

"We're happy to be 3-0, but we've got 1,000 things to work on," Brown said. "There are so many things to get fixed."

He may start with his players' demeanor. A little reality therapy might do wonders.

Sadly, not a single Longhorn was upset with how they looked, and that's as troubling as anything I've seen in years. This was supposed to be a difference of Knights and day, but until Texas' Brandon Foster recovered the onside kick with 35 seconds remaining, the outcome was in doubt.

"You have to give them credit," receiver Quan Cosby said. "They're going to have a really good season."

"At Texas, you're used to things being easy and winning big," defensive tackle Frank Okam said. "I'd be more concerned if we lost. We're still undefeated, and how many teams in America can say that?"

"LSU and Oklahoma are two good teams," receiver Nate Jones said. "They handled their end, and we handled our end."

Denial, all of them. No one's advocating disparaging UCF, but fans should be concerned about the team's arrested development.

It's one thing to crow about being unbeaten and brag on Jones' terrific start and feel good about the way Foster might put in an early claim for the Thorpe Award after all his clutch plays like his interception return for a touchdown.

But Texas let a comfortable 23-10 lead slip away and failed to produce offensive touchdowns out of drives to the UCF 2, 3, 14, 2, 25, 23 and 19-yard lines. Out of a possible 42 points there, the Longhorns scored just 15. That's frightening because they will see better opponents.

"If we do," Cosby said, "we'll have to play better."

Apparently, we vastly overrated this Texas team with its new offensive line and raw secondary. Either that or, as Okam suggested, the Longhorns are going to steal a page from the 2002 Ohio State championship club that relied on every lucky bounce and late-game miracle and Big 12 ref's flag to squirrel out a le.

"This should set us up for close games in the future," Okam said. "That's the mark of this team."

It's one of them. You do have to salute Texas' resilience. On a day so humid you could squeeze a Top 10 ranking out of a team, Texas came out strong but wilted inside the Knights' 20 time and again.

There's so much wrong with the Longhorns it's difficult to know where to start. Jamaal Charles' fumbles. Ugly arm tackling by the defense. Colt McCoy's fifth interception of the year and almost two more. The inability to score in the red zone. Mack's own inexplicable decision to go for two and the failure, which put his team in harm's way.

The Longhorns look so plodding at times, they look like they're running in cough syrup. Charles' runs of 46, 28 and 27 yards were neat deals, but his other 19 carries went for 52 yards. Twelve of them gained zero, one or two yards. Very, very pedestrian.

And could his two lost fumbles endanger his starting position?

"No, sir," Charles said. "Anybody can fumble. I just had a bad game, and I'm disappointed."

Not to be a total downer but Texas looks nothing like a Top 10 team. And even its big win over TCU is now tainted with the Frogs' debacle at Air Force.

Oh, McCoy completed 32 of 47 passes, but Greg Davis must have watched the movie "Hitch" on the plane from Austin for all those quick outlet screen passes. Davis did make a brilliant call with the deep throw to Jordan Shipley off a McCoy bootleg. (Yes, that Shipley.) But only one brilliant call a game?

    Here's the bottom-line truth.

Texas is a good team that desperately needs to make mega-leaps in improvement to reach OU's level or it most certainly figures to lose three games, if not more.

And UCF ain't bad. Kevin Smith is a player who runs hard. The Knights' defensive intensity never wavered. George O'Leary's building something special.

But Texas should look better than this. Even if it has recovered all three of its opponents' onside kicks.

    -------------------------------------------

The worst part about this whole thing is that these guys don't even seem to realize how embarrasing it is to barely eek out a win against a team with half of your talent. There is no killer instinct with this team, no discipline, and no pride whatsoever. This officially proves that Vince Young was not only the star of the team but was also responsible for the motivation, killer instinct, and discipline of the team. It's ing scary that a 20 year old kid could accomplish more from a leadership standpoint than all these coaches combined. We need an overhaul. Mack needs to be the recruiter and figure head of the organization while some actual football coaches run the team. How can you be so bad with so much of a talent advantage? These ers make D'Antoni look like the best coach of all time.

Maybe when OU hands them their ass on a plate, they might shape up.
