That was about the only time I ever saw DROB in a 'selfish' mode, and it made me yearn for that sort of determination and drive in every game. Not that he dogged it, but he was, like Tim, a team player and very unselfish.
In this game He showed all his skills--jump shots, drives, back to the basket moves for dunks, etc. against double and triple teams.
It made me wonder how much more he could have scored in ordinary games if he'd had a different mindset. I think it would have helped, not hindered the team.
His season scoring avg. was nice, but nothing outstanding, with the exception of the last years of his career where the back injury really limited his play.
That reminded me of how much I hate Jack Haley.
How could you not cheer a performance like that though? Even if it was Kobe, I'd still be cheering for him after 50+, unless it was a playoff game.
I remember being pretty upset because the game wasn't televised and then even more upset when I heard what happened.
I remember some hack writer in Portland called Robinson's 71 a "farce that is bad for basketball". I was freakin pissed! Yes the team fed him the ball in an unimportant game so he could get the scoring le but it's still an amazing feat.
If I remember correctly, John Lucas was the Spurs' coach that year. He tried to get David to be more intense and selfish and . I didn't like that. And apparantly it didn't suit David either.

Yeah, I agree. It was worth it because it robbed Shaq of the scoring le, who I never liked after that made up story about David snubbing him for an autograph.
Did Shaq ever actually win a scoring le? Or was that gonna be his year if not for the 71?
I've despised Shaq since the 1st day he set food in the league. I knew a guy in school at the time who was gay for shaq and hated Dave and the Spurs. He was so in pissed the day after that game. I talked all day until he wanted to seriously fight me over an NBA scoring le.
Damn, that was fulfilling.
Surely you aren't trying to use that series as a reason to talk ...everyone knows that series is more tainted than this years WC semifinals...step your game up

Damn right it's tainted; the Mavericks shouldn't have even been there, and the outcome proves it.
In the second half of that game, the Clippers were cheering David on.
Yeah, it's the refs fault Josh Howard kept asking for that timeout.
David's 71 point performance is one of my best memories as a Spurs fan. Him winning the scoring le over Shaq was nice.
