I put this in the college forum, but since this could involve the NFL, I'll put it here too.

    Weis escaping to New York?
    Sunday, Sep 23, 2007 2:58 pm EDT

Don't be shocked, should the Flailing Irish of Notre Dame start 0-8 and finish 2-10, if Charlie Weis seeks a convenient escape hatch in January: the New York Giants.

How interesting that Tom Coughlin's tenure with the Giants is ending as Weis, a New Jersey native and former Giants assistant under Bill Parcells, stumbles in his so-called dream job. Rewind to last month, when Weis said he expected to end his career at his alma mater:

I don't think he's moving to the NFL.

    He'll stick with the Irish.

I think he would leave. That way he could play the "I didn't get any help at ND" card and get paid by the Giants AND ND through whatever buyout they have.

Na, his pride's on the line.
He's a ND Alumnus and has too much loyalty to his Alma Mater to turn his back on it.

Plus, NY is going to make a push for Bill Cower.

Them and everyone else firing a coach this year.

    True that.

But, you know they're going to try to break the bank to get him.
Plus, what other teams with coaches on the hot seat are as enticing to someone like Cower other than the Giants?

    Cleveland...he used to play there.

    Washington...Danny boy pays people.

If for some reason Fox is out at Carolina, that is where Cowher lives.

I don't think Cower wants a team that is rebuilding, as Cleveland always seems to be, and I don't think Gibbs will leave after this year.

Carolina, however, would be a team that could get him. But, would you rather coach Eli Manning or Delhomme/Carr?

I still think that the Giants are the best fit for Cower.

I'd be surprised if the Giants didn't land Cowher this offseason.

Despite my disappointment over the Giants game, Washington has a coach - and his contract isn't up for 2 years.

    I would agree.

True but you know as well as I do that Herr Snyder is impatient and is not above moving Gibbs out to make a big splash with Cowher.

All things being equal, I think he will go with NY...although I still say a dark horse is Cleveland.

no way weiss leaves. Notre Dame is not going to let him out of a contract without a serious buyout from an NFL team, and no team is going to spend that kind of cash just to get Weiss out of his cotract. I also don't think Notre Dame is ready to give up on him, if he has similiar results next year when his players aren't mostly freshman and Sophmores then they might buy him out and let him go then. If that happened I think he would be seen as a failure at head coach and have to come back and re earn his stripes as an offensive coordinator. Just my Humble opionion.

    I completely agree with that.
