Pop usually pulls players for not shooting whem they're open. I don't think vaugn had much choice, it would have screwed everything worse if he had NOT shot shen he was wide open.
He might have done ok against Nash, or he might have fouled out on charges.

I agree. He was left really wide open many times...His shots were not always falling...but hey, if they were going to leave him open all night, he should take those shots...
Still, a solid outing from Vaughn on the whole...
I did find that weird...that he was taking so many shots...more than Tim/Manu combined...I thought that maybe Pop told him to do that? Do you think?
I'm sure Pop told him that he's going to have to shoot a lot more with Tony out. Especially when defenses are going to sag so far off him.
Do you guys think they'll be a battle between Stoudamire and Vaughn to start?
It would be unusual for Pop to hand a new guy a starting job.
stoudamire will have to earn it.
Damon definately wil get time in starting role.
We playd just 7 guys against Phoenix, if jaque would not hit those shots ... losing streak continues.
No Horry - wow. HE was killing Phoenix in 2005
View from press row
FSN Arizona's Mark McClune held up a "Robert Horry" mask to ask a fan what he would say to the Spurs forward. The fan ate the mask. It was Horry's first visit since he leveled Suns guard Steve Nash during last season's playoffs. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he was not worried about how fans would react to Horry but did not play him. Fans probably feel like Nash did during his bit on suns.com's Virtual Locker Room, in which Nash dons hockey gear and asks, "Anybody seen Robert Horry?"

Vaughn had to take those shots, it would have been poor basketball not too. The Suns were content to double team any player outside Vaughn which made it very difficult to rotate the ball to an open man (since Vaughn always WAS the open man). Statistically, you go for that wide-open jumper every time instead of feed it to another player who will have to deal with a contested shot, and hence, a lower fg%.
Anyways, Damon should clear up the problem of defenses ignoring our pg. They will be much more hesitant to leave him open and he will be able to draw in defenders.
Does playing like this really help the Suns? So what, they can only guard Tim when Vaughn's in the game?
They should have used this game as an opportunity to try different matchups to see if they could find something that worked, rather than attempting to exploit a weakness that in all likelyhood won't be there next time for a meaningless regular season victory, er I mean loss.
Idiocy. They passed on their chance to learn about how to beat us.
All very true. I would've liked to have seen Vaughn's assist total a bit higher than it was. But what the ? They still won the game.
Vaughn sucks.
But I credit it him for trying to stabilize the PG position with Parker out.
I'd rather a player be a little aggressive than tentative.
I can't believe he scored 17!
No one was guarding Vaughn. He should have had more than 17 pts. It was absolutely ugly to see him be the focal point of our offense by default.
Seeing him so WIDE OPEN felt like watching one of Nellie's teams intentionally foul a poor free throw shooter.
Yeah, yeah he's a good locker room guy and hustles on defense. That's not the point.
San Antonio Vaughns!
Nice grammar in the thread le![]()
In Nash's defense, the strategy was to leave Vaughn open to shoot.
But it does remind me of a genius line by ShoogarBear in chat last night...
"The only way Vaughn could be more wide open is if Nash was trying to guard him."
The plan was to let Vaughn get that many attempts. Not that Vaughn was burning Nash, if you weren't paying attention. And it's not a bad strategy, by the way. If I'm playing the Spurs and I don't have anyone who can guard Duncan, I'm going to make Jacque beat me.
40% >Horry, Finley, Bowen
since we have no offense Pop will have no choice but start Mighty Mouse, eventually. plus vaughn's energy is always better off the bench.
i think Nash didn't guard him in all night at all.. and it was his coach's call... he deserves ALL our respect.. Nash is a great compe or and a classy guy...
I think along about the end of the first he was 2 for 9. Which is around 22%. I'm surprised he kept tossing it up. But, I suppose if they leave you wide open enough times, you will eventually hit some.
His shots total in that game is the equivalent of what Kobe takes in 45 seconds.
Can't blame Nash; he wasn't defending Vaughn. In fact, NO ONe was.
The Suns decided to double other players, especially Tim, and let Vaughn beat them with his jumper if he could. He couldn't. And it was embarassing watching him become the shooter for the Spurs, heaving up brick after brick.
He finally figured it out and made almost all his points by driving to the hoop. He wound up with a decent percentage and 17 with a little help from FTs.
