(Berkeley, California) There have been two Berkeley City Council resolutions intended to frustrate and threaten the U.S. Marine Corps recruiting office.

The city manager was directed to send a letter to the U.S. Marine Corps saying they are "uninvited and unwelcome intruders" in the city.

In addition, the city attorney has been directed to investigate whether the city's anti-discrimination laws can be enforced at the center, based on the military's consideration of sexual orientation in hiring.

And here's response to their resolutions:

A message from Senator Jim DeMint.
DeMint to Berkeley: Support Our Marines or Lose Federal Funds

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) released the following statement in response to the decision by the City Council of Berkeley, California to evict the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Station from the city.

"This is a slap in the face to all brave service men and women and their families. The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money. If the city can't show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer funded handouts. I am currently drafting legislation to ensure that American taxpayers aren't forced to pay for this insult by rescinding all of the earmarks for Berkeley in the Omnibus Appropriations bill, and to transfer the funds to the Marine Corps."

    Toledo, Ohio

    http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs...WS16/802090394

OK, so 200 Marines stationed in Grand Rapids, Michigan, piled on to five buses and came to Toledo, Ohio, yesterday to practice some urban patrol exercises. The Toledo police knew about the request for the three-day exercise well in advance, but somehow Mayor Carty Finkbeiner didn’t see the memo requesting permission for the event. So when when the first bus arrives at 3:20 p.m. and Staff Sergeant Andre Davis steps off, he is greeted by a city employee and told that the mayor wanted him and his soldiers out of town by 6 p.m. “I wish,” Sgt Davis drily remarked, “they would have told us this four hours ago.” [Update: a reader points out that it is incorrect to refer to Marines as “soldiers”: soldiers serve in the army, not the Marines. I regret the mistake.]

    Indeed.
I gather that Mayor Finkbeiner (a Democrat, readers will be surprised to learn), like the folks in Berkeley, California, can’t think of the United States Marines without having the first lines of “The Destruction of Sennacherib” float through his head (“The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold …”) “The mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people,” said Brian Schwartz, the mayor’s spokesman.

    Gee, isn’t that a shame?

Lance Corporal Brandon Bukrey-McCarty recalled how useful such training was when he had been deployed in Fallujah in 2006-2007. The training, he said, “got me used to looking up on rooftops, looking around every alley, every open door.”

Too bad, Brandon! Carty Finkbeiner thinks having U.S. soldiers in town will frighten the voters, so your comrades will just have to do without that training.

The company’s commanding officer, Major Jeffrey O’Neill, was disappointed by Carty Finkbeiner’s cold shoulder—it would, he noted, be difficult to find a suitable alternative venue for the exercise—but “we’re Marines,” he said, “We’ll adapt and overcome.”

I have no doubt about that. I hope part of the adaptation will be to present the City of Toledo—or maybe Carty Finkbeiner himself—with the $10,000 tab that the aborted exercise cost the Marines.

Mayor Finkbeiner can boast on his official website that Tony Packos Restaurant in Toledo was “made famous on the television show M*A*S*H.” But when he has an opportunity to help the men and women who in real life protect this country, including the City of Toledo, he refuses to grant them the sort of permit he would routinely give to a bunch of anti-American activists who wanted to organize a protest march down Main Street. I think it’s disgusting. If I lived in Toledo, I’d be wondering when Carty Finkbeiner was up for re-election and would look forward to sending him out on a 6:00 p.m. bus at the earliest opportunity.

Like the enitre military was during the VN war, the Marines here are collateral damage from the overwhelming unpopularity of dubya/ head's bull war grab for oil. So

So Marines, how does it feel to be the receiver rather than giver of collateral damage? No big deal, right? Any need for medical care? Tough . Just shut up and Be A Marine. Don't take it personally.

As the extortionist pointed out, USA people are supposed to be free to speak their mind, to protest, to dissent lawfully, without fear of retribution, which is what extortionist is intending. Ex-post facto attachment of strings to federal funds. "It's youtr money", except when you dissent.

I expect some of those 25K private contractors deputized and Licensed to Kill by the FBI as a federal police/spy force will be scoping out the Berkelely and Ohio perps.

    .
The firestorm of outrage is from those that have heard of the stories, not the Marines. They haven't complained or taken it personally, but you've done both.
    Why is that Queen pompous-ass?

some people have problems with usmc recruiters (what with all the pressure they have to get someone, anyone in the military nowadays) because some lie and entrap 17-year-old kids (who don't have fully developed frontal lobes) and blow smoke up their asses in order to get them to sign these long term contracts...without telling them to get their parents' input at least
Didn't you mean 18 year old kids?

Do they also not have fully developed frontal lobes?

Explains that whole Obama and the youth thing.

As if Berkely wouldn't play that card if they had it.

If I had my druthers; the govt. wouldn't be funding so much damn crap they wouldn't be able to exert influence/control as such. Dangerous and scary isn't it? The lefties wanted it; they got it. Congratulations.

Good point. But then again, we dont know if the funds theyre cutting off include things like Interstate maintenance, and other "infrastructure-type" projects.

If thats the case, then the State could sue the government.

Kind of sobering that there would be enough earmarks in a single funding bill to get the cities attention, and cause it to change course in such dramatic fashion, huh? Doesn't count all the normal budget crap.

ing government takes our money (well, the money of those of us who pay the vast majority of taxes), uses it to dole out political and economic favors to friends/donors/whoever, to entrench itself, and keep its members in power. Then a bunch of those people, to show their gra ude, go on TV, Radio, and the papers and RAIL on us for being GREEDY - and not paying our fair share!!!!

Ahhhhh, all the $$ being threatened is pork barrel. Thats why the city is sweating.

I understand your anger, then. They only decided to play ball when their "extra-allowance" was threatened. The Feds ability to cir vent the applied logic of our cons ution by way of "extra money" that can be given and taken away to each state is atrocious. Every state is guilty for the situation, IMO.

If all 50 governors got together and said "This is the way we will do things from now on..." to the Fed, the Fed couldnt do jack legally. But thats never going to happen.

The Fed is only a willful representation of the collective states. What they say goes.

Great. More minor symbolic matters for the general populace to concern themselves with instead of a $9 trillion national debt with the Chinese holding a cool tril of that, untold trillions of future en lement program liabilities or Iraq.

All good points. But the States coming together under the pretense of "We run this place, not the Fed" would solve a lot of our problems.
