I loaded up espn and saw Yao on that examination table, started feeling queasy.

Nothing to say really except sorry, Rockets fans. Looking forward to the day when sports injuries are a one to two week ordeal at most. Of course, athletes will probably continue to push the sports to the edge of medical technology anyway.

What kind of lingering problems will this type of injury have?

I get much joy from teams losing with a full squad but not from injuries. Sucks for the fans.

I remember seeing him on the cover of "ESPN the magazine" (back when we were fooled into thinking it was going to be a good magazine) with his China national team uni and everyone thought he was going to change the nba.

To a certain extent he has changed the NBA, in that there is an NBA China and he created a market really where the was none. He is an idol for 1/6 of the world population, so his impact has been huge internationally.

I also like him a lot as a player. I truly think, he would be destined for greatness without these injuries. To me he is better than Dwight Howard. Hopefully, as Z has shown, he can come back from these injuries and the Rox can build a real team around him. A team with dependable shooters, and a real PG.

He did change the NBA. Which player 7'4"+ has his shooting touch? He proves to every big man in this league that "Big men cant shoot" is a complete myth.

The problem with that is that it's almost impossible to find other speciemen like him. It's the same thing as people expecting to find 6-10 dudes who could handle like Magic, or 7 footers who can shoot and move like Dirk, KG, or 320lb dudes who have the abilities that Shaq had. Those are rare people, who just win out in the genetic lottery.

When I think to people who changed the way the game is played, I look at what Wilt did, at what MJ did, and to a certain extent to what Nash did in the current era. They all brought a style of play which the whole league tried to copy.

But with the guys above, it's impossible to copy because it's impossible find new guys like that.

I believe that if every big man in this league work as hard as Yao did, they will shoot at least 75% from the FT line and have a decent 15 footer at their arsenal.

abandoning project yao is probably the smartest thing that the rockets could do if they plan on contending for a championship any time soon...and the same thing can be said about mcgrady. the team can be good in spurts, but never for long periods thanks to injuries from both of them.

disagree 100000%. what the rockets need is yao to end his commitment to the chinese national team. hopefully after this latest wear and tear injury (that's basically what stress fractures are) the CNT will see the light and not ask any more from yao after this olympics. they aren't unreasonable and they know if yao won an NBA championship it would bring more glory to the chinese than a possible 6th place olympic finish would.

I don't think you know the Chinese National Government very well. They'll make Yao play in the summer compe ions until he's 60 as long as he's standing.

someone on clutchfans started up a thread asking chinese what their reaction has been...

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread...2&page=1&pp=20

it should be interesting to follow. lol some chinese are pissed at yi for hurting yao. it seems like the chinese fans value a NBA championship more than the olympics since they know they have no chance. they really dislike the chinese basketball association for making yao play in national team events. and for the most part they are still very supportive of the rockets even without yao.

there was also one chinese guy who said that this was the CBA's decision to have the surgery done now so that he might have a chance at participating in the olympics. we will probably find out in time if that is how things were.

by way of the press conference yao just had he said surgery is not definite. he is going to be getting different opinions and a decision will be made within a week to 10 days. i feel bad for the guy he said he felt horrible when he had to tell the team that he was out for the year.

This is terrible, sad news. Poor Yao...and poor Rockets. Just when they were starting to kick butt, this happens. My heart goes out to Yao, the Rockets and their fans.

Interesting article by Ludden on yahoo, basically calling out T-Mac to step up.

Is there another player with his kind of talent regarded so poorly by writers and fans?

With Yao down, Rockets need T-Mac to rise up

"There’s little chance Houston advances past the first round without Yao, so McGrady already has his excuse."

    Ouch!

Another interesting take is that he could've decided to take a month off, rest the foot and come back for the playoffs. But having the surgery now preserves him for the Olympics. And there's just no way that he's not going to play for China given what the Beijing Olympics mean to that country economically and politically.

Also, I'm in 1st place in my fantasy league by a mile, and I totally forgot about this angle when offering condolences earlier. Yao was on my ing fantasy team! I had to cut him and pick up Troy Murphy as a replacement. Biedrins is out too for me, so I'm rolling with Z and Murphy now.

I don't think so. Shaq has worked his ass off his entire career trying to improve his ft's and he's still piss poor at the line.

Shaq has spent about as much time working on his free throws as OJ has spent finding the real killers.

It's all talk. If Shaq really wanted to improve his free throws he wouldn't shoot them like a re ed 8 year old. He doesn't give a about his free throws, but obviously he can't say that to the media.
