depends on if you are just listing the best 5 at each position, or if you are building a team.

    Best 5 by position:

    PG - Magic
    SG - Jordan
    SF - Bird
    PF - Duncan
    C - Shaq

If I was building a team though... this would be my lineup...

    PG - Nash
    SG - Jordan
    SF - Pippen
    PF - Duncan
    C - Hakeem

My reasoning for that team... Jordan and Duncan are obvious shoe-ins.

Nash gives you everything you could want offensively in a PG... shooting, passing, vision, penetration. The shooting is probably what I like most out of him. Greatest shooter in NBA history IMO. And can you imagine the open shots he will get with guys like Duncan and Jordan, as well as the easy buckets he can find for those guys? He can average 20 ppg on wide open 3's ALONE.

Pippen gives you a versatile lockdown defender, who doesn't need the ball to be effective, but can also score points when needed to, and is very athletic, leading to easy scores, especially with someone like Nash running the point.

Hakeem is probably the most versatile C ever, and can do anything you want a center to do. And with him and Duncan manning the middle, then it doesn't really matter how poor of a defender Nash is, as long as Nash doesn't leave anyone open for jumpers (which shouldn't be a problem since if someone gets by him, Duncan and Hakeem will give them a warm greeting)

Am I constructing a team to win? Is it simply to be a list of my favorites at each position? Do positions even matter?

    Overall...

    PG: Magic
    SG: West
    SF: Jordan
    PF: Duncan
    C: Hakeem

I'd run a three-guard lineup to space the floor and be quicker in transition. Though a bit smallish, they would be a great rebounding team due to the fundamentals of the bigs, the size of their wings and the athleticism of Jordan and Hakeem. They'd be very good defensively with Jordan shutting down the best offensive wing and Duncan defending man-to-man the best offensive post with Hakeem there to swat any attempt within range with his rotation defense. Having two posts capable of 20-10 a night is HUGE for the inside-out halfcourt game, while having three capable facilitators from the wing will benefit the transition game immensely. West was a great long-range shooter and Jordan was pretty solid and capable of getting hot quickly, but more importantly, each of the big men can step back to 20-feet and knock down a jumper.

And yes, I've put a lot of thought into this.

If it's a lineup of my favorites at each position then...

    PG: Kevin Johnson
    SG: Jordan
    SF: Bird
    PF: Duncan
    C: Hakeem

That team would give up 150 points as well.

Running Chambers out there at C is what those in the industry call "D'Antoniin'" a lineup. Love Chambers, but his best mismatch potential is PF, because he's a decent enough rebounder to hold his own nightly, but was so quick off the dribble he'd net your slow-of-foot PF into foul trouble in no time. At center, he'd likely get as many fouls as he'd draw.

Chambers could throw it down, though. With authority!!!

We were typing ours up at roughly the same time. I love your thoughts on Nash. It's awesome to read. I agree with Hakeem as well. I know other centers were maybe more physical, and therefore more dominant, or were bigger/stronger and had better overall careers, but Hakeem from 1990-through-1996 was the best big man I've ever seen.
