Because Kobe did a little of both. He starting cussing and slapping his hands therefore not being soft and not getting into a fight. Thats what Dirk should have done. He shouldn't have fought West but should have talked smacked at him or something and not just sit there and stare at him
The Hornets are trying to be physical with Dirk and test his physical toughness. Earlier in the game Chandler threw Dirk to the ground and was t'd up for it. What got West upset is that Dirk threw an elbow when the refs weren't looking. Isn't that what you're supposed to do when another team decides to test you like that? Give it right back?
The Mavs can't count on Stu Jackson being lenient with them. Dirk did the right thing. Even slapping West's hand away is risky.
I'd like to see Kobe and West go at it though![]()
I honestly thought West looked like the and the bigger idiot in that exchange. He's made it be known that he can lose his cool and get annoyed with an elbow. That will come in handy later in the series.
Kobe punched by chris childs, kobe thrown to the floor by Raja Bell, Garnett punched by anthony peeler, Dirk gets tapped in his face. Kobe and Kg are never called soft but because Dirk was simply tapped he was called "soft". Double standard. Tonight Rasheed Wallace missed a layup vs the sixers in the final seconds, if Dirk had been the one that missed that layup there would tons of people saying Dirk is a "choker". Double standard.
Can anybody tell what West is saying?
"I'm a fluke all-star" perhaps?
^ In all seriousness, I could only really make out the words "to my face" or "in my face" in that exchange.
When Nowitzki cut West’s lip in the fourth quarter, the Hornets’ soft-spoken power forward marched into Nowitzki’s face, gently tapped his cheek and told him, “You only get one time to do that (expletive).”
Outside the interview room, as West re-told that story to Paul, his point guard was downright giddy. The Mavericks had been a playoff-hardened team that had tried to bully the Hornets, get inside their heads, get them doubting themselves and Paul was thrilled to watch West get into the reigning MVP’s face.
“Did you really?” Paul said, slapping his teammate’s hand and reveling over a night when they had conquered the first test together.

The only way Dirk should retaliate is to dominate the series. Slapping West back isn't going to cure any soft image if he gets suspended or if they lose the series.
Michael Cooper is a genius...ya have dirk pimp slap West so he can miss a game. it would make more since for avery to send in the goon Juwan Howard to lay one of his well known playoff flagrant fouls onto D. West in game 2
"You pimp slap him and you pimp slap him hard"![]()
The responses here are incredible. Let's get 3 things straight:
1) You are NOT going to get ing suspended for slapping his hand away. Sorry but it's not gonna happen. To think that it's even a possibility is just homerism in defense of Dirk.
We're not talking shoving West, or "pimp slapping" him, or anything else, we're taking about simply removing his hand from Dirk's face. That's it. Absolutely no chance of a suspension.
2) Even if Dirk doesn't want to respond physically, HE DIDN'T EVEN RESPOND VERBALLY. He said NOTHING. He could have at least told that scrub piece of to get his hands the off his face. But again Dirk did NOTHING.
3) If Dirk wanted to respond with his game, he sure as failed miserably at that in the 4th quarter.
Sorry but unless you're a pure Dirk homer I don't see how this incident doesn't show Dirk to be mentally soft. Maybe it's the Euro mentality, but either way I don't see the Hornets showing Dirk any respect for the rest of his series, and since he's the leader, no respect for the Mavericks as well. Not that the Mavs deserve any at this point.
And I'm back to being convinced that Dirk isn't mentally capable of leading an NBA team to a championship.
It is what it is. West punked Dirk and treated him like a , and Dirk took it up the ass with no resistance whatsoever.
I think people are making way too much of this tap to Dirk's face, when it is shown in the video do you not realize that it was in slow-mo? In slow-mo it makes it look much worse than it really was, it happened pretty quickly and Dirk was probably lost in the heat of the moment.
Have to say I agree with that. No way would he be suspended for slapping West hand out of his face, if so, suspend me! That is a total disrespect punking move that west got away with.
It didn't seem bad to me at the time.....but I also assumed that Dirk would turn West into Tim Thomas Part 2. That didn't happen, and that makes it a lot worse IMO.
At least wait and see what happens in game 2.
There was 2 minutes left in the game and the Hornets were up by double digits. Pretty soon after that, Avery waved the white flag and removed the starters. Let's see what Dirk does in G2. You get West back by delivering a hard foul and going off on him, scoring-wise. Remember when Shaq drew blood on Stack in G1 of the Finals? That hard foul on the breakaway in G4 was Stack's revenge. Bavetta seperated them almost immediately before Dirk could really do anything to respond.
yea i think Dirk is going to have a nice 40+ point game on tuesday...
I had the opposite reaction as mono. I was dismayed when I first saw it, which was in a crowded bar with the sound off. I wasn't paying that much attention at that point because the game was effectively over.
Seeing it again, Bavetta seperates them before Dirk really has a chance to do anything. By way of example, one time when I was in high school, me and this guy were insulting each other all throughout biology class. The bell rings and I get up to go to another class and he says to me "Yeah, you better keep walking." And I say back "Whatever, ." He then hauls off and suckerpunches me right then and there. I've been in fights before and I didn't think it was at that point yet, and the punch didn't hurt, he got me on the side of my head. But I kinda stood there for a few seconds kinda stunned, like "Did I really just get punched?" By this point, a crowd had gathered and witnessed the punch. Then I went at him. Honestly, I really do think West looked like the in that exchange. It looks to me like the Hornets like to dish it out but get pissy when they get it back. Let's not forget that's why West got so upset in the first place: The Hornets decided to push Dirk around and he's giving it right back to them.
I really want DAL to obliterate NOH. This ing Cinderella team needs to get sent back home early.
CP3 = Punk ass little
West = You dumb this is the NBA not MMA
Chandler = I think I'm hot because I can dunk the ball
Peja = No problems with you
Mo Pete = Who the is this guy again?
