I watched the entire game and it was one of the best I have ever seen. I was surprised to see the Hack-a-Shaq tactic employed, but I thought it was brilliant coaching. Just another gem from Popovich's bag-of-tricks. When they took Shaq out, it was a psychological defeat for the Suns.

Anyway, I am of the opinion that any unguarded shot should go in almost every time, and for the amount of money these players make, they should learn to make free throws. Shaq still hasn't learned, he shows no consistent rythym. Wilt Chamberlain never could either. Both make it look like a chore. Wilt was quick with his delivery and airballed many of them. Shaq at least concentrates up there and look how many times people jump in the lane too early and he gets a chance to miss again.

Don't be surprised if Hack-a-Shaq comes back!

One of the reasons Shaq is such a poor free throw shooter is because of a wrist injury he suffered early in his childhood. He can't bend his wrist back normally, which limits the amount of rotation he can get when he shoots the ball. This isn't a problem when he's shooting those little baby hooks, but it clearly limits what he can do at the free throw line.

Shaq has put in the time over his career to try and get better at free throws. It's just one of those things he'll probably never get good at. He's been on 4 different teams and trust me they've tried everything to make him a better free throw shooter. It's not as simple as Shaq just being lazy.

Pay me a few million dollars a year, and I bet I can find a way to make at least 1 of 2 at the line.

I don't feel bad that the guy sucks so bad at one of the most basic fundamentals of the game that teams can hone in on it. If you get a guy out there that can't dribble, he's gonna get trapped. If you get a guy out there who can't run, he's gonna get out-hustled. If you get a guy out there that can't shoot free throws, well guess where he is gonna end up?

Suns fans need to get over it and just finish the game with a higher score if they want to freakin' win. Our big man isn't exactly a free throw wizard either, but he usually makes them when they count.

Yeah. Like you, I am a basketball fan first. We only differ in having a favorite team. My team wins as yours does. We both win and lose sometimes when we should and when we shouldn't. We have better franchises than most teams. So, everyone hates us, lol.

Nice block by Oberto on Shaq a few minutes ago....

true that, i will admit that my perception is a little skewed, but i think everyone who has a "favorite" leans a little. But i do try to see everything for what it is. I will admit some things/flaws whatever you wanna call them about the Spurs.

I just wish Oberto would pull his skirt up & grab his balls and DO something productive every now & then. score, dunk, hit more jumpers...SOMETHING!

am i the only that sees the ignorance here...

you say you havent seen anything posted on the cir stances of Phil using it.......and in the VERY NEXT sentence say "he did that against someone" WTF!? get your story straight!

and Pop prob chose to "hack a shaq" earlier in the quarter for the simple of fact of not getting "penalized" for that action in the last 2 min. So they took advantage of the situation while not getting penalized as much as possible. To me, that seems like a pretty smart strategy. to be able to implement that tactic & not put yourself deeper in a hole.

and its not a "pussy move" its called exploiting a weakness.....players do it ALL the time. Next time kobe has anthony carter guarding him, watch him take carter down on the block and post his little ass up. Is that a pussy move too b/c he knows that carter cant guard him!? no, its exploiting his weakness and the nuggets weakness. that is EXACTLY what pop did to the suns and shaqueef.

youre obviosuly crying about it b/c deep down you know that if the lakers meet the spurs in the WCF, b/c the lakers wont be able to stop them. expecially without bynum. and dont bring up that they just beat them in LA, cuz that was a game WITHOUT manu (the same way that DAC cries that the lakers arent full strength when they lose; same principle) or is that different too!?
Hey , they said he did it as a lakers coach, you dumb ! I have seen nothing on the cir stances. I did get the cir stances on the his use of it while with the bulls. Stupid ass !

Son, the 55 in my handle tells the year I was born, 1955. I've been a Laker fan since the 60's. I use the same handle at the Laker board at MSN/Fox Sports. We have our own private forum there with TRUE Laker fans, not the kind that troll all over the internet posting how great the Lakers are and how all other teams suck. The Lakers are the greatest franchise in NBA history, but let me tell you something, San Antonio is becoming one of the elite clubs too, right before your eyes! They are very capable of emerging from the west this year and beating the east. Lots of teams have motivation this season, but not sure if any unit has more than they do. Remember, they need that back-to-back to quell the doubters. The fact this is the toughest year possible to do it will prove to be a benefit to whatever team recognizes that and performs accordingly.
There is no self-respecting Lakers fan that would ever call the Hack a Shaq a brilliant move. GMAB
Well, you obviously have no clue as to why it was brilliant, so let me enlighten you....Ok, 4th quarter, Shaq is in foul trouble. Set aside the fact that Phoenix built their big lead without him, he's due to come back. Now, logic says, drive on him to the basket. Either he yields to a layup or fouls out. Surprise, surprise, "Hack-A-Shaq" starts! Now, I have seen this strategy employed countless times. Shaq usually does tend to hit enough of them to thwart it. 50% is within his reach which will give his team about as many points as they would hit shooting field goals. It does extend the game a bit, as less time ticks off the clock. So, the objective of Hack-A-Shaq is to hope he misses more than half, and to get more offensive possesions.

Now, the "Hack-A-Shaq" looked really good when D'Antoni took Shaq out of the game. This was a huge psychological blow dealt to the Phoenix coach and team. This sends the message that D'Antoni doesn't have the confidence in Shaq to ride it out, that he doesn't believe in him. Any Phoenix player may soon wonder if their coach will suddenly not believe in them.

Notice how in game two, Popovich tried the "Hack-A-Shaq" trick when the Spurs were leading. Nice test as to how Phoenix will react. Well, Shaq did his part, he started hitting his free throws as he often does. He even shrugged at the camera as if to say, "I can beat the Hack-A-Shaq, why do they bother". Notice how D'Antoni left him in the game this time. This shows he made the right move now, but more importantly shows he blundered the first game by benching Shaq.

Anyway, I will live and die a Laker fan. I know my team can't win every year, but they always rebuild and return. I am a basketball fan first. Without this game no one could be a fan of any team. LakeShow, don't be a troll here. I haven't looked at any of your posts, but check mine. I am respectful to my hosts here, which are mostly Spurs fans. They vastly outnumber us, but I have found they will respect you if you behave yourself and contribute interesting stuff. Be respectful in return, thanks. Then you won't have your ass handed to you.

Spurs friends: How often do you see Laker fans fight each other on this board? lol.

that's some funny ! I just googled Hack a Shaq and my thread was the first find on the list.

I give respect to those who show respect, all others. em!

All the talk out in LA is about the de able Hack a Shaq! It is the talk of my office and everywhere I go. No one respect that tactic!

I'm sorry I havent ran into a Lakers fan who thought as highly of that tactic as you do. More power to you. It's bushleague and it s up the game. It will be a rule change next season for sure. Doug Collins said last night, he would have said that last part but he was on TV.

The league should change the rules where a foul away from the ball is one shot and the ball. That is sickening.
Look for the Hornets to deal with Hack a Chandler or the Mavs to deal with Hack a Dampier! Pathetic! Man up!

If you despise Hack-A-Shaq so much. don't complain to us. Tell Shaq to learn how to make a freethrow. People have done it with us. with Bruce and with Tim. Why now all of a sudden would you expect a rule change?

You missed the point entirely. I said Shaq knows he can beat the "Hack-A-Shaq". It worked because D'Antoni foolishly benched him. That makes Popovich's move a winner. He got what he was looking for: No Shaq in the game, and not for the reason we expected, a 6th personal foul.

Who on the Spurs will we not be able to stop outside of Tony Parker?

Contrary to popular belief Gasol guards Duncan well. They are both cerebral players that rely on fundamentals more than their athleticism. Gasol can anticipate Duncan's moves well before he even starts them, which is why he was able to block so many of his shots when they last played. Ginobli has never been a serious problem for the Lakers, Kobe can stay with him and make his life difficult if need be. Parker is the only player we can't stop, but we couldn't stop him from 2000-2005 and that didn't stop us from beating the Spurs 3-1 in that timeframe. It will be a very evenly matched series if we do meet up.
Really? Duncan averages 21.5ppg, 12.5 rpb, 3 apg, 2.5 blocks, 2.5 TO, on 53.5% shooting against Gasol in his career.

Ginobili averages about 15 points throughout his career vs. Bryant, including the time when he was a bit player with the Spurs earlier in his career. He scored 12, 14, 17, 21, 16, 23, 11, 13, 21, 22, 8, 13, and 18 points since 2004-05 season.

The Lakers DID stop Parker in 04, and that was through packing the lanes. Parker wasn't even with the Spurs since 01, and didn't play that big of a role until 03 or so. Besides, the Lakers of 05 is drastically different from that of 08.

You expect inferior teams to do like that. After all that is their best chance to win. You wouldn't expect a 4 time NBA champion to have to stoop so low to win. You would think that they could win without any tactics. Just goes to show, times a changing!

I already stated that D'antonio's an idiot but just the fact that tactics had to used disgusts me! Btw, he didn't take him out last night and the Spurs constantly used it. So getting shaq out the game was not the objective.
