Posted May 12 2008 2:17PM
NEW YORK, May 12, 2008 – Forward Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers headline the NBA All-Defensive First Team, the NBA announced today. Garnett, who earns his ninth All-Defensive Team selection, and Bryant, who earns his eighth selection, each received 52 points overall including 24 first-place nods.
Also selected to the First Team are 2007 Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Camby of the Denver Nuggets, who ranked first in blocks (3.61 bpg) and second in rebounds (13.1 rpg), and Bruce Bowen and Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs. Duncan earns his 11th consecutive selection, while Bowen earns his eighth and Camby his second.
Garnett earned his first Defensive Player of the Year award, presented by Kia Motors, by leading the Celtics in rebounds (9.2 rpg) and helping the team hold opponents to a league-best .419 field goal shooting percentage. The Celtics owned the largest point differential (+10.3) during the 2007-08 season and held opponents to 90.3 points per game, nearly nine points less than last season.
The NBA All-Defensive Second Team consists of Shane Battier of the Houston Rockets, Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets, Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic, Tayshaun Prince of the Detroit Pistons and Raja Bell of the Phoenix Suns. Paul and Howard are each making their first appearance on an All-Defensive team.
The voting panel consisted of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, who were asked to select NBA All-Defensive First and Second Teams by position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players from their own team. Two points were awarded for a First Team vote and one point was awarded for a Second Team vote.

Looks good, minus Kobe being on the 1st team every year.
Tony Parker is scoffing Chris Paul's selection to any All-Defense team.
Bowen beats out Battier for All-D First team after Battier scores more votes for DPOY, proving once again that coaches know more than writers.
Chris Fall gets the annual Larry Hughes selection.
ray allen and paul pierce should have been on the second team.
I'm a little surprised Rajon Rondo didn't get more votes. Same for Chandler.
Nice.Duncan earns his 11th consecutive selection, while Bowen earns his eighth...
the celtics are the best defensive team in a millenia.
how could they only have 1 all defensive team selection?
unimaginable.
can you splain how anyone on Denver can be on any list for defensive prowess???????
Only when Bruce is on his decline as a player is he getting recognized...kinda sad really.
how does KOBE make it on first?
wierd
Not surprising that this didn't make the NBA's notice, but by attaining his 11th selection to an All-Defense team, Tim Duncan tied Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only players in NBA history to have that many selections to an All-Defense team (Bobby Jones had 11 during his career, but 2 of those were in the ABA)
Tim also has 8 First Team selections, only Gary Payton and Michael Jordan have made more First Teams (Bobby Jones and Scottie Pippen are the only other players with 8 First Team selections).
Says alot about the defensive presence that has been in San Antonio for awhile now.Bruce Bowen and Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs. Duncan earns his 11th consecutive selection, while Bowen earns his eighth
@ Chris Paul
Rajon Rondo should've taken that spot.
Tyson Chandler and Rasheed Wallace should have more votes than Chris Paul or Dwight Howard. Howard, esp - as great as an offensive player as he is, much like Amare - his defensive gaffes are being exposed against Detroit.
That's what I was thinking. Steals=great defense now? I guess AI should have made a few ALL-NBA defensive team by that logic....
Yeah, right! Allen is the an hesis of defense.
But I agree with the original poster about Pierce - a very underrated defender, certainly worthy of second or third team.
Yeah, the fact that Paul even outscored Tayshaun Prince is also incredible to me. Yikes.
I think the top defenders in the league are Bowen, Duncan, KG, Rasheed Wallace, Tayshaun Prince, and Battier.
Who ever gave Josh Howard a vote either does not watch basketball or was drunk when they voted for him
Kobe Bryant? Defense? Since when?
Throw Camby out. Move Duncan to center and put Battier on the first team.
G Bruce Bowen
G Kobe Bryant
F Shane Battier
F Kevin Garnett
C Tim Duncan
