i'm with you on this one. Nobody in here has probably ever seen this guy play, i'm sure the spurs know what they're doing. Just have some faith in a team that has won 4 championships. They gonna pick up a FA thats an athletic wing
I just wonder if Hill could've been had in the 2nd round

    True dat.

The other question we'll never know if what would the Spurs have done if both Hill and Batum were available? Delicious question, indeed.

I think that it's a number of people's complaints, but let's just assume they tried to trade up to a low second round pick and were unable to acquire that pick. So, they chose to draft early.

I think it will be interesting to see how some people that were left on the board at the time fare in the league; CDR, Arthur, Greene, and Chalmers.

there were lots of "solid players" on the board. everything you say could also be said of chalmers or cdr.

you don't aim for "solid". if the spurs hadn't gotten lucky with some diamond in the rough finds, we wouldn't have tp, gino, or several other les.

we need those finds. i don't see this being the guy. may i be wrong.
but he very well could be a diamond in the rough, i mean when they drafted parker and ginobili i'm not gonna lie i was like who the ?? Because i don't pay much attention to the draft until it happens, why? because our opinions and who we want have no effect on who the spurs actually take. so chill out and wait for this guy to prove himself which i think he will. at least it wasnt' Romandovahovichi Demainolava Slabadonemalosavich from in butt russia or some .

I don't know who this guy is.
The sensible at ude is just to STFU, wait and see what he will do with Spurs before calling him a awful or a great pick.
    exactly, well said.

look dude, the bottom line is that outside of the no-brainer with Tim, and lucking out with tony and manu the FO has sucked in regards to the draft and you foot have to be a GM to see it.
wait so the spurs got lucky with parker and manu? They din't evaluate and pass up other players that were more popular picks?? yah they just get lucky thats bull

Lots of teams passed up CDR and Chalmers.

Chalmers is an undersized shooting guard, while CDR is another potential Chris Carrawell.

Spurs addressed a NEED in backup point guard with a potentially damn good point.

And as others have stated before the verdict is still out. Since CRD and Chalmers didn't go until the 2nd round it looks like all of the other GMs felt that they weren't 1st round material, either.

Hopefully by now everyone has calmed down a bit and lets see what happens in the summer league and training camp. This guy could turn out to be exactly what we need in backing up TP. We still need to find that wingman but the Spurs had more than one need gong into the next season and backup PG was one of them.

Last productive domestic player the Spurs took outside of the lottery?

Yeah, I'm not betting on the Spurs' "track record of 4 les". That has absolutely nothing to do with evaluation of young talent and projecting how it translates to the NBA.

People are second-guessing the pick for good reason. Hill wasn't even the highest rated player on the board in the "undersized guard with questions about his ability to play PG full-time" mold...let alone the highest rated individual player on the board regardless of position.

Blind faith in Spurs' ability to pick future studs out of college is not based in factual reality.

PT - This is the crux of it. They were obviously high on Hill, but whenever you are reaching for a player, there is value to be had in your draft position. Apparently they didn't even try to trade back to get another asset or two while still selecting their back-up 'PG'. Especially with two guys (Greene, Arthur) still there, it is imperative to get more value. Wellk, just like the Rockets did. They got their player, plus Dorsey.

I thought about this as I saw so many of the picks rolling across the screen with the message afterward "(pending trade)". I mean, there must've been over a dozen trades that simply had to do with swapping.

I'm not sure if the Spurs didn't attempt to trade back because they were legitimately worried he'd be picked up before the early second round (say Minnesota's #34 pick), or if teams really don't like to trade with the Spurs.

Given the later trade (#45 to #48) and the number of other trades during the day, I think the Spurs could've traded up or back if they wanted.

Take #24 for example...if the Spurs REALLY wanted Batum, they probably could've swapped with the Sonics and given cash or one of their 2009 second rounders as consolation.

Bottom Line: They wanted Hill and I doubt they made any attempt to trade back for fear of him not being there.

That must've been why the Lakers were looking to trade for him.

All the Lakers were doing were looking for a 3rd string point to groom to become a 2nd string point in 2-4 years when Fisher's gone.

George Hill looks alot like Rajon Rondo.

Both about 6'2", long and wiry and both excellent rebounders and good athletes.

Hill has a better jump shot but Rondo was also 2 years younger when he enetered the league.

He has all the tools to be an awesome defender at the PG spot... not just a hustler and tenacious like JV

I was pissed when the Spurs took Hill with the 26 spot. Not because I think Hill is a bad prospect, but because I thought that was way too early. I actually had Hill on the list of players I wanted the Spurs to take in the 2nd round so I do like his potential.

In the end only time will tell if the Spurs made the right decision. A comparison of the players still left on the board (i.e. CDR, Arthur, Greene, Chalmers) against Hill’s rookie season stats should answer this debate.

I will say, if those guys left on the board do end up blowing up, I think it’s high time the FO homers around here stop defending every move RC makes.

They'll never stop. RC is a mixed bag, lately worse than before, but you'll always have a cultish crew desperate to make everything grand by shouting about it. Hey, it's the Internets.
