There is no "preparing to make an offer to Maggette". Both parties know the Spurs have the MLE. The Spurs would basically tell Maggette that he can have whatever type of contract is allowed. Maggette would be able to put any stipulations into the contract he wanted.

There's no low balling here. The Spurs can only offer so much.

I'm beginning to think that Maggette is just using the Celts and the Spurs to get a better deal from the 76ers. Anyways, here's hoping we get him.

The thing to remember is that Maggette has something to lose here, as well. If he waits for Philly's promise of more money, the good teams will probably commit their resources elsewhere (which is why they are good teams), and if Philly falls through he's stuck going to a weak sister for the same pay as he would have gotten from San Antonio or Boston, and he may not get the PT he wants. He knows what he has from the Spurs, and I'm quite sure they've explained to him that there's a ticking clock attached to it.

The 76ers could certainly use him. However, they are absolutely locked in on Josh Smith and to a lesser degree Josh Childress. That is why I have a feeling this will drag out.

Maggette may be hoping for the 6ers to become involved while they are busy whining and dining Smith. Maggette in a Spurs uniform would be great, but you can't fault him for chasing the cheddar.

76ers need a SG something fierce. Maggette would be a huge upgrade over Willie Green, and they have no depth at SG. Spurs may be able to grab Maggette while Philly wines-and-dines the Atlanta players. But if Smith and Childress fall through, Philly would be willing to throw some $$ after Maggette. Gotta hope the Spurs sign Maggette before that can happen.

What kind of contract is he looking at from the Spurs? The MLE says 5.8 million for the first year. Afterwards?

Someone who knows the cap better than me should answer this, but I think they can only give 5% raises for a maximum of 5 years.

We should hear within the next day or so whether Maggette is the next target. If he is, we'll see if Maggette will go for the money or he's actually serious about wanting to win.
Don't get me started. If the Warriors make him an offer higher than the MLE,he's theirs. I don't believe athletes for a second when they say it isn't about the money.

    C'mon CM, prove me wrong.

Ah, the emotional roller-coaster that is the week between opening-day of FA season and signing day concludes day two. By tomorrow everyone will be accepting our loss of another FA. By Sunday, the uncertainty will boil over to hatred. By Tuesday, nobody will even want him here anymore. And signing day, if he comes in, we shower him with our devotion and praise him as the savior.

The max raise for another team's free agent is 8.0% of the first year salary, using the MLE.

Like I said earlier. We are all acting spoiled. Getting a Maggette or Childress or J.R. Smith would be ideal, but not likely. Those are home-runs that no one would of even thought we had a chance at just one week ago. How everyone is sounding on here reminds me exactly of the tone of the draft and then the Spurs went the other way. Not saying we can not get CM or J.R., just saying lets not meltdown if we do not because there is still talent available. Seriously though, I am getting the same exact feeling as pre-draft, it feels off.

EVERYONE is waiting on the outcomes of the teams with cap room, including the other MLE free agents. You think JR Smith is going to sign an offer sheet until the ink is officially dry in Memphis, Philly, and Golden State?
    good point

Hmmm....I just came across this guys...

Chris Duhon could decide this week's end if he wants to sign with Orlando Magic

By Tim Povtak and Brian Schmitz | Sentinel Staff Writers

    11:03 PM EDT, July 2, 2008
Free-agent point guard Chris Duhon could finalize contract terms with the Orlando Magic by the end of the week after spending Wednesday with coaches, players and General Manager Otis Smith.

Duhon, who played the past four seasons with the Chicago Bulls, is scheduled to return home this morning, where he will decide whether to sign with the Magic, or the New York Knicks. He visited New York on Monday.

"The visit here went really well,'' said Kevin Bradbury, Duhon's agent, Wednesday night from his Orlando hotel room. "Chris wants to help a team win a championship. That's what Orlando is trying to do. That's different than a team looking to rebuild. He was flattered that a team of this caliber wants him.''

Free agents can begin signing July 9, but they can reach verbal agreements earlier.

The Magic were expected to offer Duhon a three-year deal worth close to $10 million.

The signing of Duhon would end any pursuit of Los Angeles Clippers guard Corey Maggette.

The Magic were one of several teams that let Maggette know July 1 that they could offer him a contract that started with the middle-class salary cap exception of $5.8 million. Maggette is hoping to receive a larger package.

Duhon would be coming to Orlando as a backup to starting point guard Jameer Nelson, giving the Magic a better defensive presence at the position. It also would end any possibility of re-signing Carlos Arroyo.

Although Duhon might have a better chance to start elsewhere, Bradbury said Duhon would be fine working behind Nelson.

"Chris just wants a well-defined role,'' Bradbury said. "He knows Jameer is the starter, but the Magic want him. Actions speak louder than words. He was the first free agent they brought in.''

Duhon played in 66 games last season, 18 as the starter. He averaged 22.8 minutes, 5.8 points and 4.4 assists.

He met with Coach Stan Van Gundy and Smith at the RDV Sportsplex during the day, then went out with several Magic players Wednesday evening.

"Out of respect for the teams that showed interest, we'd like to get something done (quickly),'' Bradbury said. "We won't hold anyone up.''

Also on Wednesday, Courtney Lee, the Magic's first-round draft choice, passed his physical and began practicing with the club's summer-league team. He has yet to sign his rookie contract, but he has a guaranteed tender that kicked in as soon as the Magic drafted him last Thursday. It protects him in case of injury.

Lee's agent, Jason Levien, said Wednesday that Lee and the Magic would come to terms soon.

"We're going to get it done this weekend, within the next several days," he said. He is expected to sign a four-year, $6 million contract.

The Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, Seattle SuperSonics and New Jersey Nets join the Magic in the summer-league games beginning Monday afternoon at RDV Sportsplex. Patrick Ewing will coach the Magic. The games are not open to the public.
