The Spurs are now what 0-68 when a deal has gone public too early? I should have known that we knew way too much about our interest in Maggs for it to actually happen.

The only good news is that this didn't drag out. This is a better scenario than the Spurs having to wait around and perhaps miss out on everyone.

Maggette was always a longshot but yeah, this is disappointing
I'm absolutely glad that this didn't drag out.

What are the odds that Baron Davis goes back to GS now? That might be a good team. I'd really at the Clips, though.

No offense... but Maggette would be an idiot if he didn't take the deal the Warriors were offering.
True. Can't blame Maggette. This is exactly why he was always a longshot. I thought if the Warriors offered more than $45M, he'd sign. $50M would certainly get it done.

The Orlando Magic were rumored to be in the mix for free agent Corey Maggette, but it appears they've gone in a different direction.

    Mickael Pietrus

    Pietrus

Florida Today reported on Tuesday that the Magic have reached a verbal agreement with free-agent swingman Mickael Pietrus, who played for the Golden State Warriors last season.

Orlando general manager Otis Smith told the newspaper that the five-year veteran will receive almost all of the Magic's midlevel exception, which starts at $5.2 million next season. The team is expected to sign Pietrus to a multiyear contract on Wednesday.

Besides passing on Maggette, the Magic appear to have closed the door on retaining their own guard Keyon Dooling.

Smith said that Pietrus' ability to defend opponents' shooting guards sets him apart.

"In the Eastern Conference you had better be able to defend that position," he said, according to the newspaper. "We think he can really help us do that. And he can shoot the 3."

Pietrus averaged 7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds last season. Those numbers were off his career highs of 11.1 and 4.5 in 2006-07.

Money and ego, money and ego...that's what its all about. Winning is 3rd or 4th for most of these guys, though they would try to make us belive otherwise. Can't blame him on taking the high bidder.... Even the LLE sounds good to me.

RC will finally have to work for his paycheck now....

    True.

Moreover, Maggette would have had to be out of his mind to take the Spurs' offer over GS at 5 years/50 million (if correct).

No one on this board (or on this planet) would have done otherwise.

Is Childress out of reach - since the Sixers went with Brand instead of Josh Smith?

Warriors are the stupid ones here. He helps them exactly how?

Maggette does the obviously right thing by him.

Spurs once again look like a loser offseason. At least three in a row now. George Hill? And that's about it. Lame, lame, lame.

Who is going to be the first go with this logic:

"Spurs wanted JR Smith the whole time. Maggette was just CIA Pop keeping the Nuggets off the scent of the Spurs' true plan. CIA Pop to the rescue!"

Hey xtremesteven......told you so. Let this be a lesson to you since you are young. Never believe a word a professional athlete says when money is involved. You fell hook, line, and sinker for his whole "i want to play for a contender" spiel, which was all a ploy to drive his asking price up.

No way Azubuike wants to back anyone up. He earned a starting spot last year. It would be in his best interest to sign with a team that can offer a starting spot.

Oh well.... Maggette hasn't made the playoffs 8 times out of the last 9 seasons. Hope that trend continues.
