wow. i read the latest on this and she's got major issues. she was driving around and "came up with this idea". she must be a Susan Smith fan. even though this was a hoax i respect the obama campaign issuing a "speedy recovery" to her even though i know they were fighting to keep a straight face when they did it. i sure as would be.

I suspected this story was false and hoped it was false, but I take no joy in it. 1 in 6 women is sexually assaulted in this country and 1 in 4 will be the victim of a violent act in their lifetimes. It is things like this that make it so much harder for legitimate victims to get justice and help.

I just can't take any pleasure in it. I get the jokes and some of them are even funny, but basically a 20 year old girl just ed up her life because of hype and hysteria and an obvious need for attention. That is a person that needs help.

I try not to be a priss or a prude, but a lot of stuff in this election makes me cringe. The violent images against Palin (especially ones like in trainwreck's sig) disturb me. I belive the Palin/McCain leadership is to blame for a lot of the violent intensity and the feelings of fear and partisanship on both sides. But ultimately people are responsible for their own actions and in our shock and awe culture it's sometimes hard to know who is a violent psycho with sick humor and who's just going for the shock laughs.

I hate what she did, but I feel sorry for anyone who felt driven to do damage to their own body for attention in the name of a cause that will completely scorn her.

For what it's worth, Viva, I didn't read anything you said as hoping the story was true in order to bash Obama, but merely because for a story like this not to be true is so bad for so many reasons.

I'm sorry. The image of a woman getting tackled by a guy in full gear is a violent image. I get the joke. Part of me can even chuckle at it and I didn't in any way mean to imply that he was being sexist. It just also disturbs me on some level. Some things are complicated and don't fit neatly into one box or other in my mind. Sexist humor has a place.

Please understand, I'm not trying to scold or shame anyone else, just expressing that my feelings on the topic are very mingled and it's hard to be in "ha ha" Nelson mode about it.
