The universe is expanding this isn't new information. The moon was as close to earth as it has been in awile due to a wobble in the rotation but its still generally moving away at a very very slow pace.

wobble was probably not the best term.

In the language of astronomy, the two extremes are called "apogee" (far away) and "perigee" (nearby). On Dec. 12th, the Moon becomes full a scant 4 hours after reaching perigee, making it 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons we've seen earlier in 2008.

    Oh ok.

The full moon Friday night will be the biggest one of the year as Earth's natural satellite reaches its closest point to our planet....

The moon is moving away as you read this, by about 1.6 inches (4 centimeters) a year. Eventually it'll be torn apart as an expanding sun pushes the moon back toward Earth for a wrenching close encounter.

US will be screwed if the oil producers start demanding payment in Euros rather than devalued $, sorta like the Europe was ed worse for a few years when they had to pay for oil in heavily appreciated $s vs Euros.

If FX players move into $ in anticipation of $ appreciation after all this fiat US debt creation, that would help.

Extremely difficult for anybody to predict which way the $ and the US economy will go, but extreme pessismism seems to be the consensus.

I note how the RNC is contributing to the general welfare by its inane attempts to smear Obama with Blagojevich.

A lot of countries with large economies are going into full-blown Keynesian spending mode -- even China.

We're all in this together, it seems.

I honestly find it hard to stop considering this.

Those in power now, will keep some of the power. Those with money now, will still have money afterwards. And if the transition takes longer than their political career, they have made out like bandits in the meantime.

Let's not even argue party sides in this. We have all questioned politicians on both sides and how their ideas could possibly be good for this country. ESPECIALLY IN THE LOOOOOOOONG-RUN which is the most important.

Even now, considering how close to the edge we apparently are in this clusterf#ck...they are still positioning themselves on how to keep their power and money regardless of the country's health/strength.

The moon is not moving away from the earth because of solar wind reducing its mass (if that were even happening). It is moving away from the earth because tidal friction is accelerating it into a higher orbit.

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Well, if the moon remains in orbit around the earth simply because it's velocity allows it to continue free falling in a line parallel to the earth's surface, wouldn't a reduction in velocity eventually cause the moon to free fall on a shorter trajectory and, thus, collide with the earth?

Here is the explanation of the moon's orbit, in layman's terms, from the University of Indiana:

The moon is an enormous mass of rock subject to the same law of gravity as anything else; and, contrary to what fairy tales tell us, there is nothing holding it up in the sky. So why doesn't it fall down?

To understand how it can be that nothing is holding the moon up and yet it doesn't fall down, you have to remember two things: 1) the earth is round; and 2) the moon is moving horizontally at high speed. It's the horizontal motion over a round earth that keeps the moon from getting any closer.

You can see this more easily by imagining what would happen if the earth were flat. The moon would still travel in a horizontal line above the ground; but because it's also falling, it would come closer and closer to the flat earth until it collided. Now imagine what would happen if the flat earth had a slight bend in it. When the moon passes over the bent part of the earth, in effect it will pick up al ude, because the ground has dropped away underneath it. Now the moon has farther to fall before hitting the ground, and so it can also travel farther horizontally.

Once you realize how the curved earth "drops away" under the moon as it travels, you can see that with a completely round earth, such as we have, it is possible for the ground to "drop away" perpetually. If an object is moving fast enough horizontally, the curve of the earth exactly balances the distance it falls vertically, and the object never gets any closer. And that's what it means to be in orbit.
Isn't it true that if the velocity of the moon were reduced the arc of it's free fall would begin to tighten and, eventually, it would collide with the earth?

    What am I missing?

Agan, I associate friction with drag and not thrust. So, explain to us how tidal friction would increase the moon's velocity.

The tides are slightly out of phase with the moon's orbit because the earth is rotating more quickly than the moon is orbiting. The gravitational force of the earth tries to pull the moon forward to catch up. This pull accelerates the moon and pulls it into a higher orbit. It also slows down the earth's rotation slightly. Angular momentum is transferred.

You don't have to believe this of course. The theory of gravity is not nearly as strong as the theory of evolution, and we know the theory of evolution is just an atheist conspiracy. Plus, Newtonian physics has been disproven anyway. Many conservatives maintain that gravity is just God intelligently pushing us down.

In the past couple of years, but in an accelerated manner since this "economic meltdown" became evident, our government has been completely irresponsible (more so than decades past) with tax dollars.

They're spending like there's no tomorrow.

Maybe there's not. And, maybe they know it.
Give people a credit card with no limit and more often then not they will go nuts with it. Individuals spend like there's no tomorrow everyday.

Every empire goes down this road eventually. Are there conspiracies involving the direction of the spending? Of course; there always has been. Are we being bankrupted on purpose so that the American people will submit to greater international authority? Now that would be a conspiracy.

The most likely explanation is that when you let a group of people spend other people's money with no real limits on debt ac ulation, they tend to spend a lot of money.

Most of my High School Science class was on "tidal friction?" And, I just spent about 5 minutes educating myself on what it took most of your High School Science class to absorb.
