Ex-Dallas Mavericks coach still keeps up with Nets' Harris

08:36 AM CST on Friday, December 19, 2008

The matchup between Jason Kidd and Devin Harris will reignite the debate about the merits of the trade that was made 10 months ago.

Ex-Mavericks coach Avery Johnson will be one of the interested parties tuned in to tonight's game with New Jersey.

"Devin is having an outstanding, All-Star season," Johnson said. "I'm just so proud of him and the time I worked with him. I can see his growth and maturation.

"We kind of predicted it. If you go back and look at our comments, we talked about him being an All-Star around this time. It's not really a big surprise."

Harris and Johnson still talk. Harris said his former coach will call him with tips or observations about what he's done wrong.

"It's well do ented I was pretty hard on him, and that was for a reason," Johnson said. "But as time went on, I started to ease up on him.

"I love him, and I'm proud of him."

Harris ranks sixth in the league in scoring with an average of 23.8 points.

"Maybe he needed to get away from Avery a little bit," Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "He's just out there playing free."

is there anybody on earth more in love with himself than Avery?

and it's still hilarious how he tries to completely rewrite history, although everybody who follows the team knows that he couldn't stand the way Devin played and gave up on him. Avery was definitely right about the Mavericks not being a very good team regardless of who was coaching them, but he was 100% wrong on Devin and continues to be.

    by the way -

Devin is playing great in New Jersey
Kidd is much improved from last year's time in Dallas
JJ Barea is now a serviceable NBA player

Avery is 0/3 in coaching point guards.

Which is why Avery begged and begged Cuban to get him a "real point guard." Anybody with a brain could see that the offense ran much better with Devin last year and stalled anytime he was on the bench and in street clothes. If Devin can bump up his yearly average of games played from 55 to 70+, this trade will be one of the all-time heists.

You forgot the parts where he refers to Devin as his "son"

Tries to take credit for JJ Barea, saying that he "didn't come out of nowhere"

And makes another dig at Dirk, using KGFakeIntensity! as an example.

    Gotta love all the class.

This guy may be unemployed from the NBA, but his ego is working overtime.

By the way Avery was talking, I'm completely shocked that Devin didn't praise thanks to Avery and credit him with his current success in the postgame conference
