Back in 2004, After Shaq asked to be traded from the Lakers, Dallas was one team he would agree to be traded to. I seem to recall that the Mavs offered Nowitksi and Nash for him. The Lakers refused, as they wanted to trade Shaq to the east so they wouldn't face him in the western playoffs.

Seems to me both sides would be making a mistake here. Lakers would be instant contenders. Dallas, I don't know about, but you guys would. You did lose Nash anyway. How would Shaq have fit into your team in 2004?

Mavs never offered Dirk in a trade and the Lakers were never going to trade Shaq out West, only east. Actually in the '04 offseason Nash was a free agent

Thanks. My memory is fuzzy. So, if you agreed to send Nash, who else would you have traded to get ONeal, and how would you have fared? It's all hypothetical of course, but speculation can be fun.

The Mavs could've never included Nash in any deal because he was an unrestricted FA and had to agree to any S'n'T.

    I disagree.

Most Lakers fans seem to think that if Shaq stuck around they would have won a couple more rings!

The Spurs were just hitting their strides at the time.
    Kobe needed a huge contract.
Shaq would've been pouting without a huge extension of his own.
Fish would've been gone because he got a better monetary deal from GS.

Fact is, they did not win a ring for two years prior to Shaq leaving.

They would have been perenial favorites but I don't see them winning anymore rings especially with Kobe and Shaq eating up a bulk of the salary.

    On a different note:
I found it funny as when Indiana wouldn't give up Jermaine O'Neil for Shaq.

I believe it was Nash + an Antoine of the Lakers choosing. Nash/Dirk for Shaq was never on the table, it was made up by Mavfan apologists.

Mavfan apologists like to rewrite history, claiming the Lakers were asking for Dirk/Nash/Finley/the blood of 100 firstborns/eleventy billion dollars in order to feel like the Mavs didn't make the mistake of a lifetime not going hard enough for Shaq.

Some say the Lakers never would have kept Shaq in the West. I disagree. They would have taken the best offer on the table, and the Mavs would have had the best offer if they played their cards right.

And Dirk/Antoine for Shaq is a deal I would have done in an instant. Back in 2004 and right now. You get Shaq, you don't need Dampier so you re-sign Nash. You still have an Antoine left to either trade for JET (if Walker is left), or the rights to Devin harris (if Jamison is left).

Nash, JET/Harris, Howard, whatever, Shaq with Stackhouse as your sixth man and you still have Marquis Daniels and plenty of talent on the bench. That wins you a championship or two.

It's how Mavs fans are after every non-trade.

"It wasn't even possible and never could have happened"

That's the excuse, if you'll remember, the Mavs fans made after Cuban rejected the idea of a Dirk for Kobe deal. The window was very small at a chance to get Kobe, but THE WINDOW WAS ABSOLUTELY OPEN. And the Mavs lowballed it with Josh/Jet. Of course now the excuse is "the Lakers never would have done it" when in reality, it was Mark Cuban who foolishly put all his stock in Dirk.

Now comes the second excuse of "This team isn't any better with Kobe instead of Dirk".

The thing was, the Lakers wanted both Dirk and Nash, and Cuban wasn't willing to trade both. But that was the only way that the Lakers would have traded Shaq to the Mavericks.

It's wasn't on the table, but its what the Lakers in the end said they wanted, otherwise Shaq wasn't going to Dallas. Cuban wasn't going to do that at all. I don't know why people said the Mavericks offered that, but at the end of the talks, those were the two guys the Lakers wanted in exchange for Shaq.

I still think it was the worst decision mavs have ever made to let nash walk, we should have otherwise won the championships of 05 and 07 with regular-season's mvp.

The guy couldn't hold Mike Bibby. What makes you think he could hold Baron Davis or Dwyane Wade?
