If the Spurs were truly looking to set themselves up for 2010, taking on a player like Carter before that time may not be such a bad deal. Free agency is definitely a mirage for the Spurs, especially with respect to top tier FAs. It would seem a bit wiser to use that cap flexibility in a trade. And it's not like the Big 3 are getting any younger.

Of course, do we realistically see Peter Holt paying 4 players $60 mil per and giving up the lux tax rebate?
That's why I'm thinking that the Spurs may just stand pat and see how things look in the offseason. They'll know more about Manu's situation and the cap/tax situation. If the Nets don't trade carter tomorrow he'll be available again then.

I think the LaFrentz (expiring contract) and Outlaw is the best deal they are being offered for VC.
Admittedly I've been on the road, but I missed news of that offer. It's an interesting one and I'd agree with you that it's probably the best offer.

timvp, kori, is there any way that manu is just out for a week? I mean maybe the Spurs just wanna await the rest results and Manu will be back by the end of next week.

    It's a possibility right?

exactly, I find it hard to believe they would take the Spurs deal over the Blazers deal.

Bruce Ratner's Brooklyn arena, a billion dollar venture, is supposedly slipping away. That was his whole reason for getting the Nets, to include them as part of an eminent domain/real estate venture in downtown Brooklyn. Add that failure to the already miserable economy, and yeah, I can see him trying to get out of debt. He's probably considering selling the team but no one would want to buy it now.

Given this, YES, I can see the Spurs trying to bluff the Nets somehow to give them Carter for as little as possible.

I'm not saying this is the case but it's not unlikely. Remember, the Spurs are shrewd and cheap.

The glaring question is why the Spurs would throw all that money on another wing if we're going to keep Manu, but that's another issue...

Regarding Carter & the Mavs, keep in mind the Nets have the Mavs unprotected 2010 1st round pick. So the Nets do have a vested interest in not helping the mavs become a better basketball team next year. I think the Nets only see the Mavs as a last-resort option for moving Vince.

Dude, what could they be waiting on? If this has been building for a couple of days he probably had an MRI early in the week. For pro sports teams the turnaround on their MRIs is 24 hours or less. If this isn't a CIA ploy, they already know what's up.

I think they've gotten offered Josh Howard for Vince, wich is better than what the Spurs offer IMO.
Yah but I'm not sure but Josh Howard probably makes a ton of money too and the Nets wanna save not spend.

Carter is overpaid but he's been proven to be a rather durable scorer over the last 5 seasons. If all you have to give up is Hill+Mason, you do it.

Well, if you look at the Nets and their two deep, Mason and Hill would help them more than Outlaw.

Yes, if this is a CIA Pop ploy, it's possible.

However, it sounds like best case scenario is out for at least a while.

Given everything, as long as Manu's back by the playoffs, I'd be thrilled.

If Manu is just out for the rest of the REGULAR SEASON, and is back by playoffs, I am totally fine with it. Because this Spurs team can hold serve till then, into the playoffs, they need Manu at 100%. I dont care if the Spurs go in as the damn number 8 seed, if our big 3 is together and healthy, we can take it all.

Yes, a team that is moving to Brooklyn, right down the road from the site of the Twin Towers, would love to have a ass thug who hates the Star Spangled Banner as the face of its franchise.
    Not moving there anymore...

Indeed it is. Portland offering this basically takes us out of the running for Carter...not that I believed we ever were.

All we can do now is hope for the best with Manu.

Could it be something like Mahinmi situation where multiple MRI don't reveal anything, but the same ankle becoming sore/sprained leads them to consider exploratory surgery for Manu to see if there is something not revealed on the MRI?

This would take 8 to 10 weeks to recover from at least, apparently.

And they might not have anything specific to say except that they suspect that since Manu's ankle is persistently sore or gets sprained, he may have some problem with it that the exploratory surgery could identify and then fix.

And this might appear to be a season-ending decision for Manu-- it could be.

Could be. Although, knowing Manu, if it was anything that could be played through, he'd be more than willing to do it.
