If the Spurs have a press conference regarding a trade, it's always after the player has arrived in town and passed the physical. The Spurs, IIRC, have never done it differently.

I haven't seen anything about a press conference. But the Spurs don't always send out much warning. Especially if they don't want to answer a lot of questions.

The organization sort of ed themselves by being stupid over Artest in free agency. I find it hard to believe they couldn't have offered him better than his current 1 year, 7 million dollar contract. But it's awesome they expected different results with an improved lakers squad without adding significantly to the lineup.
