Lions' Smith, Raiders' Cooper missingComment Email Print Share Associated Press
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Two NFL players are among a group of boaters reported missing off Florida's Gulf Coast.
Sports agent Ron Del Duca said his client, Detroit Lions defensive end Corey Smith, and Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper were two of the four boaters who were reported missing Sunday morning by the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard issued a statement saying the boaters were on a 21-foot vessel that left Clearwater Pass on Saturday morning for a fishing trip and did not return as expected. Crews used a helicopter and a 47-foot motor-life boat to search a 750-square mile area west of Clearwater Pass on Sunday

but in all seriousness, hopefully these guys are ok and are found soon.
Nick Schuyler is from Cleveland and went to Kent State, where I also went
It seems like both players took their life vests off and gave up.

Rest In Peace to both those players. My condolences goes out to their families. I am sure this is extremely tough on them.
I love Tom Cables take on it today, coach of the Raiders, he still has hope, maybe the current took them to a island ,he will not think anything else unless told otherwise....Very cool
that's sad- I can't imagine being in that situation. I can't imagine that kind of hopelessness to take off you jacket knowing you are going to die
Am I the only one who thinks that boat was too small for 4 guys?
Sad situation, my heart goes out to these families.
Your mother should have went through with the abortion.
They were wearing them you ing idiot.
No, you're not the only one. That's the first thing I thought. 21 foot boat for deep sea fishing far from land? That's not a boat. That's something you jump into when the boat is sinking.
Whew, glad I'm not the only one.
They must have been amateurs.![]()
You think? What would have clued you in on that? Is it that two of them were pro footbally players and by no means professional fishermen?
, do you make it a point to post the most obvious you can think of?
They claimed one of them was like a fish. I think its the one from the Raiders. One of my buddies takes even a smaller boat out that far from shore. I won't go with him. It always amazes how unsafe people can be.
I'm finding it difficult to fathom why take off your life vest at all! As long as the vest is on you have some bit of hope that you will remain afloat and be found. Why would 2 strong healthy athletes give up after not even 24 hours??
I hope they did wash ashore somewhere.
You can lose your reasonable thinking when under the cir stances these men went through. They needed to not only be physically tough but moreso mentally tough.
I've never been in a life and death situation, and I don't know much about the two NFL players...but I think about stories I've read where those in similar scenarios wouldn't give up because all they could think about was their wife or kid or whatever...
At least one of these men was a devoted husband and father.
I can't imagine thinking about my spouse and child...and then just giving up.
But again, I've never been in that situation. Just saying...
Just a truly sad story, especially knowing now that someone was rescued.
