    From the article

We remain a center-right nation in many ways—particularly culturally, and our instinct, once the crisis passes, will be to try to revert to a more free-market style of capitalism

I interpret this as saying we remain a center-right nation in many ways—particularly culturally, and our instinct, once the crisis passes, will be to try to revert to a more free-market style of capitalism.

actually there is more than one article in the magazine .. but here is a quote down a few lines from yours ..

"All of this is unfolding in an economy that can no longer be understood, even in passing, as the Great Society vs. the Gipper. Whether we like it or not—or even whether many people have thought much about it or not—the numbers clearly suggest that we are headed in a more European direction"

I'll say it again, where were all you "conservatives" when Bush was doing pushing the exact same economic policies as Obama? Are Republicans really that attached to the rhetoric of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh? Learn how to think for yourselves and realize that our economy isn't a partisan issue.

You asked me what I believe.

    That is what I believe.

Now, if you believe we will become a fully socialist nation and there is nothing we can do about it, that's fine.

    I disagree.

You're an idiot who doesn't even know what he asks people.

I hear the calls from people who escaped from countries like Russia, or former Soviet bloc nations like Poland, and they are frightened to see what is happening in the United States. They say "we already saw this movie - we know how it ends!" And many of them also say they remember their parents denying what was happening until it was too late.
I'm married to somebody who lived in communist Poland. What really reminds her (and her family and friends) of living in a Soviet-occupied country was the Bush administration's response to 9/11, especially the surveillance tactics of the Dept. of Homeland Security.

Glen beck was calling out Bush for the last 28 months or so of his presidency - starting on the border and really pounding him on the stimulus bill and bail outs. Many conservatives did the same thing.

Like how Republicans are saying that it's a good thing that these uprisings are 'spontaneous' and not organized? But if they were organized, they'd be talking about a new power structure in place for the Republican party? lol

    I did indeed.

The quote I truncated for my own devious purposes summed it up nicely.

    Who's going?

Get to one to take a stand against tyranny!

The amount of people who can't pay their taxes this year has increased by 3 fold from last year. Yet Obama is telling those folks "Not to worry about it. Government will get your back. Well just pass another spending bill! YES WE CAN!"

Never mind responsible Americans like you and me who pay our taxes and mortages and live within our means.

DOWN WITH SOCIALISM, RADICALISM AND FISCAL IRRESPONSIBILITY!

    AMERICA FOREVER!

Where does Obama mention that he wants socialism to take hold in the USA?

The GOP faithful were quiet as church mice on spending, too.
I think the primary reasons for that is the same things I have stated in the past.

    1) The acknowledgment that we should take care of the elderly (medicare prescription reform)

    2) Wartime spending is easily seen as part of the cons ution. I have repeatedly stated in the past that we should never run a deficit except in times of war, recession, or depression. 9/11 and what we did after fully justified a deficit spending. Social programs do not.

The Iraq war was not justified; therefore the spending on it was unjustified.
