First off these guys didn't wear makeup and use copious amounts of hairspray with animal print tights. There's hardly a pattern comparing the the two. As a matter of fact these guys are closer to lumberjacks than either of the previous people or groups mentioned above.

And yet they still did everything in their power to market themselves as counter-culture.

My guess is, hair bands didn't really worry about whether you thought they were gay or not when they were living the sex, drugs, rock n' roll life in the 80s.

That's the point. Things haven't gotten weirder or crazier, just the social norms have shifted. The kid in the OP probably gets a ton of attention from girls, whether he's gay or straight.

Overall, there has been a huge shift towards the ambiguously silly term "metrosexual", which is all considered acceptable and even expected from certain segments of the female population.

New, probably Maynard, depending on what you view heavy metal as.
