The Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy is one sexy trophy. Yeah, you heard me, sexy.
Sure, it may not be as identifiable or cool as its older distinguished cousin, the NHL's taller, heavier and more buoyant Stanley Cup, but young Larry (um, perhaps I should call it "Lara" for this poor analogy) is still one good lookin' piece of hardware.
The trophy, made up of nearly 16 pounds of sterling silver and vermeil (sterling silver covered with 24-karat gold), stands about two feet tall and is etched to resemble a basketball net. Each season, the Tiffany & Co. Silver Shop manufacture a new LOB for the winner of the Finals to keep forever. Again, it's sexy trophy ... just not a particularly valuable one.
Cash4Gold, America's No. 1 personal gold buyer, today suggested that the Lakers could send in their new trophy to Cash4Gold to help cover the costs of Wednesday's multi-million dollar parade. Certified appraisers estimate the trophy might contain about $3,500 worth of precious metals.
$3,500? That's it? That would help payoff, what, a few purple-and-gold balloons? (To compare, Cash4Gold said the melted Stanley Cup, if it's made of solid silver, would fetch about $7,500. Please, Hammer, don't hurt us.)
Never one to miss a promotional opportunity (or BDL shout-out), Cash4Gold CEO Jeff Aronson congratulated the Lakers on their le and said he "understands" if the team takes a rain check on sending the trophy in for sentimental reasons. And then he slyly added, "All other Americans should keep in mind that Cash4Gold is available to help them cash in on unwanted gold or silver jewelry, so they should contact us today to request a free Refiner’s Return Pak."
