But the Spurs still need a third string point guard. Could Marcus Williams be that guy?

Let's hope Finley agrees to go away.
If Spurs trade Mason, they will need a shooter (Finley or someone else).

I wonder who they're targeting in the frontcourt. I'm starting to think they're just gonna bring back Gooden for the MLE, and maybe someone like McDeyess would accept the LLE.

Or, if they want to trade, they'd likely have to give up Mason and Bonner, which, like EricB said, would make the backcourt thin.

The rest of this week should be exciting

Third string point guards are a dime a dozen.

The Marcus Williams who is associated with the Spurs isn't a point guard. D-League point guard maybe but not NBA point guard.

Now if you are talking about the other one ... then yeah maybe if he gets in shape

McDeyss would have to be brought in on the MLE, LLE is too cheap for him.

Another trade would have to be in the works as well.

Spurs trade Bowen, Thomas and Oberto for Richard Jefferson according to ESPN
    Mike Monroe

The Spurs are nearing completion of a trade that will send veterans Bruce Bowen, Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for athletic, 29-year-old small forward Richard Jefferson, NBA executives from both the Eastern and Western conferences have told the Express-News.

Jefferson averaged 19.6 points per game in 2008-09, his first season with the Bucks after seven with the New Jersey Nets. He started in all 82 of the Bucks’ games last season, making 43.9 percent of his shots, 39.7 from 3-point range. He also averaged 4.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

Bowen, 37, has been with the Spurs since 2001. A defensive standout at small forward, he started every game for six seasons, including three seasons that resulted in Spurs’ les.

Oberto, 34, recently underwent a procedure to address an irregular heartbeat that had hampered him since the 2007 season. He had been a Spur for four seasons, starting 64 games.

Thomas, who will be 37 in October, came to the Spurs in a trade deadline deal in the 2007-08 season.

Jefferson has two years remaining on a contract that will pay him $14.2 million next season, $15 million in 2010-11. All three of the Spurs involved in the deal will be in the final years of their contracts next season. Bowen’s $4 million deal and Oberto’s $3.8 million deal are only 50 percent guaranteed for next season.

I will go with someone else. I don't want to risk Pop benching RJ or Manu to play Finley 35 minutes a night

Why would the Spurs need a third string point guard? If they need one that badly, they have Ginobili, or they could find some D-Leaguer that is better than Vaughn.

The first thing you do now when free agency starts is back Rasheed or McDyess to sign for the minimum. Show the glaring hole in the roster and hope one of the two decides to try to win a championship.

It's a long shot but that hole at center has to be pretty damn tempting for a player who wants to win a ring.

    That was a GREAT trade

If we can get a decent big and bring Bruce back we're the 2010 champs.

    TD/RJ/Manu/TP that's great

yeah, if they want a ring more than money, that is the question. Cleveland may have more money and look more attractive to those guys.

Suddenly, Malik Hairston and Marcus Williams aren't that important ... especially if Bowen comes back and Mason stays on the roster. Do you keep one of those two players or do you stock up on bigs?

I might keep one but no way do you need both now.
Really? I think you keep both. They're cheap. Seriously. Start looking at the money side.

I would have to say it would take the MLE to bring in McDeyss.

Now that I think about it, Thomas could very well be bought out by the Bucks. I wouldn't be shocked to see him back in a Spurs uniform.

Like Oberto, Thomas is a good deep bench big. Still need a starter level big but the summer is just getting started

On August 13, 2004, Jefferson signed a six-year, $78,000,000 contract extension with the Nets.
So he would be out in time for our 2010 plan, correct?

The Spurs desperately need to move Bonner's contract somehow, some way to clear MLE space. To think they'd spend the MLE with a committed salary of about $70+ million or so isn't realistic. Maybe they can Scola Splitter somewhere to dump Bonner's contract (hopefully not Houston or any other WC rival though).
