Forward Bass agrees to four-year deal with Magic

The Orlando Magic are trying to keep up in the arms race in the compe ive Eastern Conference, agreeing to terms on Friday with free agent forward Brandon Bass on a four-year deal believed to be worth $18 million.
The 23-year-old Bass was one of the most coveted big men in this year's free agency class, having been a valuable role player off the bench for the Mavericks the past two seasons. He played in 81 games for Dallas last year, averaging 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 19 minutes a night. The Mavericks tried to keep him, but Dallas' commitment to Magic free agent center Marcin Gortat to an offer sheet made money scarce. New Orleans, Bass's first team, and Cleveland also were working to sign him.
With Hedo Turkoglu gone to Toronto, there may be an opportunity for a starting job at power forward in Orlando for Bass, with the Magic moving Rashard Lewis back to his normal small forward position. But even if he doesn't start, Bass will provide toughness and size for an Orlando team that now has to contend with Shaquille O'Neal and re-signed forward Anderson Varejao in Cleveland and the return of Kevin Garnett and newly signed Rasheed Wallace in Boston.
The Cavaliers made a last-minute push on Bass, according to a source, but didn't have a way to get him the money he'll get in Orlando. Cleveland has come to terms with free agent guard Anthony Parker and will probably use its mid-level exception on him, leaving only the biannual and veteran minimums for other players.
Bass's contract has an out clause after three seasons.

Man, Bass has been amazing vs Spurs![]()
Hate to give up Bass, but not enough minutes at the 4 with Dirk and Marion. And this will be one of those don't match ours and we won't match yours kind of deals. Yeah!
I'm kinda glad he's gone.
+1
Now, Mavs can't beat us !!!!
Here we go again![]()
I like Bass but he is undersized at the 4 and 5. Not many minutes for him here especially with Gortat and Damp at center and the possibility of running Dirk at center with Marion at the 4. I will miss his great midrange jumper, monster dunks and excellent free shooting
Now you must fear the Polish Hammer![]()
Why does Dallas get rid of the Spurs killers?
Devin Harris, now Bass
(Ok, Dirk kills us too, but he is definitely a keeper)
Orlando lost a lot of key players. I don't think they even got better.
happens when you have Michael Finley guarding bigmen. Bass is a scrub and is useless with Marion and Dirk there. No way you give him minutes when you have a frontcourt of Marion/Dirk/Dampier/Gortat with Howard also able to give lots of minutes at SF if needed. Bass would have been injury insurance at best.
I'm hoping this opens up Singleton for some more play. The guy turned into some bizarro double-double machine every time he played last year.
I'm gonna miss Bass but won't lose too much sleep over this. Was hoping we could get a sign and trade outta him though.
I think everyone who comes to the Mavs just turn into Spurs killers.. They probably do like some Zoolander to make them play really good against the Spurs
On occasion he'll have games where he gives you literally nothing, but for the most part he's a very strong 10-15 minute a night guy.
Nope. Orlando will get both players. They want a world championship and are willing to screw over Dallas to get it.
I'm sure you're ecstatic about the possibility of adding Carlos Boozer to your team.
All you es are gonna feel the wrath of the fully unleashed Basshole!
The only reason is Lewis's contract.
5 out of 5, es!

Yeah, Mavs will get Gortat now, and Magic will sign a scrub bigman from somewhere. I think I may have overstated it a bit on Gortat - he'll probably be okay. I just like dissing Cuban... don't we all?![]()
With the early bird rights for Bass, Donnie could have signed him at mid level but he stayed dumb again, just to see such a talented youngster walking away towards Orlando. it's still unclear Bass and Gortat which is more deserving of the MLE but letting Bass walk is surely a terrible decision like the millions others Donnie has made previously.
I mean the finance has never been something bothering Mark Cuban and the Mavs have far exceeded the salary cap since re-signing Kidd, so Donnie should spend the last penny in his purse in this summer to get our team as much as talent as possible. It's really a foolish move to accept a talented young guy who has done an awesome job during the last two seasons being napped by another team while we could have retained him, at least we should have done a sign&trade with the Magic in order to add some depth to our bench.
