Yeah all of these movies are listed as they were released, in other words no movies were released in between:

    Body of Lies
    Blood Diamond
    The Aviator
    The Departed
    Catch Me If You Can
    Gangs of New York

And even though not every one of those movies was great, his acting certainly was.

Agreed. As the "mrs" said, he'll be RIGHT there after a couple more years.

His performance in Revolutionary Road was outstanding...even if the movie was a total downer. And Shutter Island looks spectacular.

Now what about females? I may be having a memory problem but the only modern time actresses I can think of are Sally Field and Meryl Streep. Then of course Katherine Hepburn. And the fourth spot could go to Joan Crawford, but probably Bette Davis, but I would give it to Barbara Stanwyck because she's my all time favorite

Agreed. If that movie had anyone else in his place, I would've stopped watching after 15 mins. Instead I went and bought it on dvd.

Have you seen 'This Boy's Life'? Classic DeNiro and a very young DiCaprio in an awesome performance.

That was right after Body Of Lies, but I didn't list it because I haven't seen it, but I will.

What about the Mount Rushmore of people whose first names start with T and whose last name is Hanks?

DiCaprio is one of the better actors of his generation-and luckily he has become a regular in scorsese movies just as deniro was when he was younger. He's playing Teddy roosevelt in a film by scorsese coming in the next year i think, and he'll continue to get great parts so he could when its all said and done be that generations best. And i just saw whats eating gilberts grape, damn he did a good job. Pretty entertaining movie. Id say theres a group thats hard to distinguish the exact four-the group would be

john wayne, Clint, Newman, nicholson, hoffman, redford, brando, deniro.....id say pacino and hanks are close but just behind these guys. By the time hanks is done he could easily add a few more great films and definitely be one of the best. His versatility is pretty amazing, people forget his older films, he can do it all...gotta love Big-that's just a comedy classic.

A couple of people have objected to Hanks and youre all crazy.

The dude was robbed of his THIRD best actor oscar when he lost for "Cast Away" to Russel Crowe's one note performance in "Gladiator".

He was also fantastic in Saving Private Ryan but lost to some italian dude who was in a movie no one saw.

For almost two decades, every single one of his films has broken the 100 million dollar mark, he's won two oscars and become "The most trusted man in America" (Just ask the The SImpsons writers who joke that the government had to borrow some of Hanks' credibility since they were all out).

As for DeNiro. I cant justify DeNiro over Pacino or vice versa. No one really stands out thats been named so far.

As for DiCaprio, he's never won and I would add Johnny Depp (who can act circles around that any day of the week) ahead of him, but like I said a parameter is they need to have won at least one oscar.

Also, whats with Mavs fan's bizzare obsession with DiCaprio and "The Departed"?

So, if Crowe has to give his back for Gladiator then Hanks has to give his back for Forest Gump. That was embarassing.

On my personal list, I would have to add John Cazale. I know the guy passed away at a young age and that he only made five films, but those five films are all classics due in no small part to his acting. And Meryl Streep is better than all of these fools.

Sorry, but you lose any credibility as a "movie buff" if you are using the ing Oscars as a qualifier, and Johnny Depp is the perfect example of why. He's been consistently good, and amazingly versatile, for over 20 years. It's not his fault the Oscars are so ed that he was never nominated until his breakout performance as a drunken Disney pirate.

Under the current format, I'd keep Brando from your top three and add DeNiro, Depp, and Buster Keaton (which was an inspired suggestion from someone else that I'm stealing). However, I think there is a flaw in looking at only leading men. The real depth in the talent pool is found when you start looking at character actors.

    +1

Gladiator was far and away a better film than Cast Away, as was Russell Crowe's performance over Hanks'.

The two movies that Hanks won best actor for, as well as the 3rd movie da_suns_fan feels he should have won were overrated. All good movies, definitely. But I've seen all those movies twice (once in the theatre and once at home) and I've no desire to see any of them again. I own Gladiator and have seen it no less than 20 times. I own Schindler's List (WAY better than Forrest Gump) and have seen it no less than 20 times.

Forrest Gump = Good, but overrated.
    Philadelphia = Good, but overrated.
Cast Away = Good, but overrated.

And, in my opinion, Liam Neeson should have won the oscar for Schindler's List over Hanks in Philadelphia. And The Shawshank Redemption should have won best picture over Forrest Gump.

Tom Hanks is an incredibly talented actor and deserves the recognition he gets. But to insinuate that he's one of the 4 greatest American actors of all time is not only ludicrous, but insulting.

I recently watched Philadelphia the other day and was blown away at how ham-handed the entire movie is. It's the nineties version of Crash. And Crash winning Best Picture is why the Academy Awards are so scoffed.

I understand your frustration with the Oscars, but at least go with nominations then.

Even if thats the case, the idea that you replace Jack Nicholson with any of those guys means YOU lose all credibility.

Actually, no. I'll give you that your list includes some GREAT actors. At least youre not saying "Leanardio DiCaprio says hi".

As if that guy (who is usually isnt even the best actor in the movie he's in let alone of all time) deserves a place on the mount rushmore of actors.

    ing Mavs fan.

Some more non winners that I love include Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson and Lawrence Fishburne.

    Decaprio

Gladiator was a poor man's "Braveheart" and Joaquin Phoenix's performance annihilated Crowe's. Russel Crowe wasnt even the best actor in that movie.

Hanks isnt coming off the list. Hanks was so good in Cast Away you felt sad for a freaking volley ball. And Forrest Gump was hilarious and youre a hater if you think otherwise.
