He's 31, and last year, he didn't make a 3 pointer in 39 games. His lifetime 3G% is .260. This is also the point where player's athleticism, his primary attribute, starts to fall off the cliff.

I'd imagine having two guys with the same name on the team would get very confusing.

As if people dont stumble over Ginobili, Mahinmi, and the Haislip/Hairston combo enough.
Yep, that's exactly why Pops Mensah-Bonsu was released.

I don't hate the idea of Mason being a Spur, but I don't like him as a fit as the current team is constructed.

Mason, really, at this point, is a pretty similar defender to RJ; both not quite the athletes they used to be, Mason with a more considerable drop-off, and are probably better off against the more physical type players, rather than the quick, highly-skilled offensive players. (ex. In a matchup against the Lakers, they'd probably both be better suited guarding Artest as opposed to Bryant; not completely incapable of guarding Kobe but definitely better suited for Artest.)

If the Spurs are going to bring someone in, coming to the conclusion that Hairston just isn't quite ready, I'd prefer they get someone that's capable of playing significant minutes alongside RJ. Someone with an offensive skill set that compliments RJ defensively with lateral quickness and offensively as a knock-down shooter.

Raja fits the bill, at least reputation-wise, but I question whether that's all it is..

His reputation. (At least, at this point.)

I'm not sure that guy's out there, or could be had for the package the Spurs would want to give up, so I'd much rather see the Spurs give Malik the opportunity to fill the role.

If the Spurs had even a 35/36yr. old Bowen, or the equivalent player, they could start him alongside RJ and have a similar dynamic to '03 (Jackson, Bowen and Manu off the bench) but that's pretty much a pipe dream.

The Spurs most likely have to hope they can get what they need from what's on the roster or they're going to have to find a player with enough quality to warrant the minutes Roger would most likely get; since he'd probably be the odd man out through trade or doghouse.

Or, Pop could just say screw it, throw his best offensive lineup out there and hope to out score and impose his will on the opponent. (At least his best offensive lineup wouldn't consist of Finley and Bonner this time.)

LOL @ the people that think Desmond is better than Roger Mason..neither of them can create their own shot, so Desmond doesn't have that advantage..he's clearly a better defender, but Roger is a much, much better offensive player, and is much more offensively versatile, which speaks volumes on Desmond Mason..he's also a much better lockroom guy..

Desmond Mason isn't good..he got by on his athleticism before, but he's an irrelevant player now that he's lost it..I don't see the point of having him and cutting either Hairston or Williams..

that would be a great pick up-the spurs can always use athletic guys and he's just that. Too bad there's no reason he would go to SA when there's a lot of other teams that can offer him more out there...this is just another "wish" thread, not happening, or even worth discussing.

I'd much rather we keep Hairston and/or Williams instead of bringing a guy who so obviously doesn't fit.

Actually, I wouldn't mind signing him. As the Spurs have no roster spot, it won't happen. And I'd only trade away Bonner in order to get him.

Desmond > Roger all day, everyday, and this day included.
Desmond Mason is injury prone and isnt nowhere near as clutch as Roger is. Roger > Desmond ALL DAY EVERY DAY!

This thread looks damn familiar. I see a few of these every year on this board it seems from a certain group of spurs fans. They always find the the biggest washed up scrubs (always some 30+ african for some reason) that has already played on at least 4 different teams in their career and proceed to pine away for the spurs to sign said scrub.

Never mind the spurs don't really need another defensive athletic wing with two guys that already fit that bill (Richard Jefferson and Malik Hairston.)

Kind of reminds me of the spur fan last year that wanted to sign Bonzi Wells.

Does not fit. We need a good shooter to fit in the good defender description. Clearly this guy does not have range.

Does anyone think there are already too many veterans in the roster? We need some youngs to keep a compe ive atmosphere. Hairston is the right person with nice summer performance and a minimum contract. No reason to waive him before the season starts.

It seems like every thread finds its way back to trade Bonner.

    Parker hurt = trade Bonner
should Pop have a beard? = trade Bonner
Manu says anything in Spanish = trade Bonner

Not me I started posting about a month ago.

I'm not urging the Spurs to sign him, this post is to see what we think of him and if it fits our team as the wing defender a lot of people have asked for. As many have said he might be OK to do that but the rest of his game is not exactly what we look for (not a shooter). Some say he is obviously not coming since he doesn't fit exactly what we need. Well, very few players fit exactly and even fewer are available. Considering signing a free agent that plays a position you have some need for is not "not even worth discussing" in a freaking DISCUSSION forum?!
They always find the the biggest washed up scrubs (always some 30+ african for some reason) that has already played on at least 4 different teams in their career and proceed to pine away for the spurs to sign said scrub.
As many of the veteran role players that have come to help the Spurs (and other teams) win a championship?
    Bowen
    Barry
    Finley
    Elie
    Kerr
    Horry
    ....

Never mind the spurs don't really need another defensive athletic wing with two guys that already fit that bill (Richard Jefferson and Malik Hairston.)
I'm sorry but last I checked Malik Hairston was still a someone trying to get into the league. Don't get me wrong, I like his game but considering him as a lock for a rotation player on a small market team that is going all-in without even considering other options is being too optimistic of his immediate future.

Desmond Mason made a career ENTIRELY based on his athleticism..now that he has injuries and his athleticism has clearly heavily declined, he's going to be a useless player in the NBA..

Hairston having more athleticism makes him a better player, just like that..simply for the fact that Mason's game is completely based on athleticism..

He is a terrible shooter, one of the worst in the NBA.
    Fixed.

I like Mason a lot, don't get me wrong. I actually have a Hornets Mason Bobble Head in my office at home that I got at a game. But the guy is one of the worst shooters I've ever seen. I really don't see a role for him on this team.
