Isiah looking at 'big' move

Isiah Thomas called his 33-win team "soft," which is probably being kind. He could have said "bad" and "underachieving" just as easily.

But the Knicks president believes he's already upgraded the roster by drafting Channing Frye and David Lee and by acquiring Quentin Richardson and Nate Robinson in a trade. Today, Thomas will begin pursuing free agents and is focusing on signing a big man, preferably Kwame Brown or Jerome James. Thomas said that he intended to begin calling free agents one second past midnight, and he's confident that the Knicks will acquire a starting-caliber player.

The Knicks can offer their $4.9 million mid-level exception or they may be involved in a sign-and-trade.


IT'LL COST YA: A Pistons source said yesterday that Detroit would not allow Larry Brown to leave for the Knicks without some form of compensation. The same source indicated that Detroit believes that Brown will return as Pistons coach next season, putting the odds of Brown leaving at "25%."

Brown is the Knicks' first choice to become their coach, and Thomas has said that he will not pursue Brown as long as Brown is under contract with the Pistons.
