The hotel at Poznan Poland where Greek team is staying only gave 11 beds for 12 players. The team is very mad because now Zisis and Spanoulis have to share a bed and they are upset about this.

Also the room where Bourousis stays had just a hole where the window is. All hotels are booked in the area and they are stuck in this mess.

You guys do know that Polanprzem works at a hotel over there?

Anyways: Thanks Polanprzem, job well done!

Spain favored to win European basketball le
    By Ryan Lucas

The European basketball championship opens Monday with Spain once again starting out as the favorite.

The Spaniards enter the tournament with a squad laden with NBA talent and the motivation to win a European le after losing in the final at home two years ago.

Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol leads the team, which lost to the United States 118-107 in the gold medal game at last year’s Beijing Olympics. Gasol is joined by his brother Marc, a Memphis Grizzlies forward, and Portland Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez.

Spain won the world le in 2006 and hopes its talent and international experience will finally result in a European le.

But the Spaniards, who have been runner-up six times, are wary of being tabbed the tournament favorite in Poland. Spain hosted the 2007 compe ion, only to be upset by Russia 60-59 in the final.

“Two years ago we were also favorites and we know what happened,” coach Sergio Scariolo said. “Winning les isn’t so easy.”

Pau Gasol is coming off minor surgery on his left index finger last month after injuring it in practice, but should be ready to lead the team when it opens play in Group C against Serbia on Monday.

“It’s not exactly what we wished for, but instead of feeling sorry for ourselves over what happened, we’ve tried to find the right solution,” Scariolo said. “Our idea is that Marc (Gasol) and Felipe (Reyes) can’t limit themselves to believing they’re just subs utes for Pau.”

Defending champion Russia begins its le defense against Latvia in Group B, but without Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko, who averaged 18 points per game and earned tournament MVP honors in 2007.

In what could have been an intriguing matchup, France opens against Germany in the other half of Group B. San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker leads France, which will look to get back on the podium after dropping to eighth place two years ago.

Germany, however, will be without its NBA star, Dirk Nowitzki. The Dallas Mavericks forward led all scorers at the 2007 championships with 24 points per game, but Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has refused to allow him to play in the tournament.

Greece, the 2005 champion, opens the tournament against Macedonia in Group A, where Croatia also takes on Israel.

In Group D, traditional power Lithuania opens against host Poland, and Turkey takes on Bulgaria.

The top three teams from each group advance to two six-team qualifying-round groups. The top four teams from each group—taking into account results from the preliminary rounds—advance to the quarterfinals. The final will be played in Katowice on Sept. 20.

Orlando Magic center Marcin Gortat proud to play for Polish National team
    By Josh Robbins
    Sentinel Staff Writer

One of Marcin Gortat's dreams soon will come true.

The Orlando Magic center will wear a red-and-white jersey with the word "Polska" on its front. A flag-waving crowd of adoring fans will fill the stands. His country's national anthem will play before tipoff of a crucial game.

And it will all happen in Wroclaw, Poland, just 130 miles from his birthplace.

Gortat's homeland is hosting Europe's biggest international basketball tournament, EuroBasket, for the first time since 1963, and he is one of the event's main attractions. Gortat is the only current NBA player on Poland's national team, which will play its first tournament game on Monday against Bulgaria.

"The group of people that we have right now is probably the strongest team we've ever had in the basketball history of our country," Gortat said in a phone interview. "That's going to be a huge, huge chance for most of us to win something in our life. We had a discussion with our coach, and he told us that there's going to be only one chance — one life chance — when we're going to have an opportunity to play in front of our own crowd."

Gortat, 25, already is a celebrity in Poland. Easily recognizable at 6 feet 11, he can't walk on a crowded street without people swarming around him.

The last three months have raised his profile back home. In June he became the first Polish-born athlete to play in the NBA Finals. In July, Gortat signed a five-year $34 million offer sheet from the Dallas Mavericks, only to see the Magic retain him by matching the deal.

Orlando's decision caught him by surprise. He didn't expect the Magic to commit so much money to a reserve.

"It wasn't any disappointment," Gortat said. "It just isn't normal for the team to match the offer for a backup center who is playing 10 minutes a game. It was just a huge surprise for me. But I'm really happy that I'm going to have this opportunity to play for this team [the Magic] again. Obviously, we're going to have a good team, and our goal is going to be to win the championship."

Gortat said he has recovered completely from a back injury he sustained Aug. 14 in an exhibition against Great Britain. He said the injury turned out to be a muscle pull and added that he now feels "great."

This is the second consecutive summer in which a Magic center will play in a major international compe ion. Last year, Dwight Howard won Olympic gold with Team USA.

"I think all those experiences are good," Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I've never seen anything but a positive with the guys I've coached that have played in those things. I've never seen a downside to it. I think it helps him [Gortat] and beyond that, I think guys playing for their country is something that should be supported anyway."

Magic swingman Mickael Pietrus decided against playing for France in EuroBasket. Pietrus' agent, Bill McCandless, said Pietrus played at the end of last season with "microfractures" in his right wrist and wanted to give the wrist additional time to heal. Pietrus should be fully recovered by the time the Magic begin training camp on Sept. 29.

Gortat hopes he'll have a quick turnaround from the end of EuroBasket to training camp because the tournament's championship game will be played on Sept. 20.

It will be a tough road. Spain, the reigning world champion, has Pau Gasol, Ricky Rubio and Juan Carlos Navarro on its roster. France has Tony Parker and Boris Diaw. Turkey has former Magic player Hedo Turkoglu.

"I believe we can have a big result in this tournament," Gortat said. "The main factor is going to be that we're going to be playing in front of our own crowd. So this is a huge, huge thing for us."

Darius Washington was cut from Macedonia roster.
Yeah, Coach Arsic chose for fellow American Jeremiah Massey. Too bad, personally i think darius was better for us. But on the other hand, we also need a better player in that position, so Massey is useful, tough decision it was. As point guard we have Vrbica Stefanov and another PG, Stefanov is one of the best, we need him so he would be playing for sure, he will retire after eurobasket. So i guess after this tournament Darius will take his position and continue with the NT.

But he is going to Poland also, he trains with the players and is just sitting on the bench.

So today begins the 2009 Euro...

This tournament should be very interesting.

Here is a quick presentation of the contenders.

    Favorite for gold:
    1. Spain (gold in Japan, silver in Beijing, they are the team to beat. Gasol, Rubio, Navarro, Fernandez... the starting 5 is impressive and the bench is pretty dense too. Since 1999, Spain has won 3 sliver medals and 1 bronze medal in Euros, it is now time to claim the Gold. However, there are a few reasons to believe for non spaniard fans: Calderon is out, Gasol was injured during the preparation and the loss by more than 20 pts against Lithuania)

    Outsiders:
    2. Slovenia (no superstar but a bunch of experienced and talented players led by a great coach: Juric Zdovc)
    3. Turkey (a great duo with Turkoglu and llyasova, many dominant big men... but a weak backcourt, it could hurt against the best teams)
    4. France (with TP, Diaw, Turiaf, F Pietrus, Batum or Diot, this is possibly the best team on paper but here is a group of guys who can win against Spain and lose against Belgium 7 days later)
    5. Croatia (talented team with a very good bench)
    6. Grece (well organised and very experienced, the Greek NT will lean on their duo Spanoulis - Bourousis but without Papaloukas and Diamantidis, getting a medal would be a true exploit)
    7. Russia (No Kirilenko, no JR Holden, an injured Khryapa... the reigning european champs know how to win but they will have a hard time achieving an historical back to back)
    8. Lithuania (like Greece and Russia, they will miss many of their best players: llgauskas, Jasikevicius, Siskauskas, Songaila, Kakenas. The frontcourt is solid, the backcourt is not...)
