I think you need to re-listen.
Is that from the Schoening interview -- I can't listen from this computer -- because Ian did say that he had picked up some bad habits in the Euroleague with the way they're allowed to set screens over there; and he did say after viewing the tape he wouldn't be making those same mistakes again.

It's completely unreasonable for him to live up to that statement, which is why I'm not excoriating him for it, but it wasn't a wise proclamation on his part.

The guy just seems to need more court time than he's been getting, thus far, if he's going to get up to speed in time to be a real contributor this year.

Don Newman -asst, coach, discussing the importance of keeping the guys fresh for the playoffs.

It's going to be a long year. Not many back to backs for Timmy maybe even Manu. It will be interesting to see how Pop allocates the minutes and the rest schedule.

    I'm tellin' you...

The ability of the Spurs' young guys to get to the foul line, combined with the Big 3+1's exploits, and I'm absolutely ecstatic about this team.
There is no reason why we can't be a top 5 team in getting to the line.

It was from practice. They asked Ian why he was in foul trouble and he said he was having to adjust from playing overseas and being back in the NBA. He said that the coaches had him watch film and that he had to adjust. He never said he would not make those same mistakes again, at least not in that video.

He does need more court time and I don't know if he will ever correct his fouling. But it is unfair to say anything about his comments, considering he is young and that he was coming off a game where he did foul less.

James scores 22 in return from flu, but Cavs lose
    By Paul J. Weber

LeBron James is apparently feeling much better.

James returned from missing a game with the flu and scored 22 points in 19 minutes in a 105-98 preseason loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.

James, who said before the game his flu recovery was going well, was 7 of 14 from the field and had six rebounds. He’s still expected to sit out Saturday’s game against Dallas.

Tony Parker scored 22 points to lead the Spurs, who were without coach Gregg Popovich who wasn’t sick, just taking the night off.

Along with James, Darnell Jackson and Coby Karl of the Cavaliers also tested positive for Influenza A. Six Cleveland players have had flu-like symptoms this week.

Karl and Jackson returned with James, and Cleveland coach Mike Brown said everyone was on the upswing.

Mo Williams scored 15 points and had six assists for Cleveland, while Shaquille O’Neal made just 3 of 11 shots, finishing with eight points and 13 rebounds.

Tim Duncan scored 13 points and had nine rebounds for the Spurs before watching the second half from the bench, where he was the key authority figure in Popovich’s absence. Popovich gave his assistants a crack at coaching, which isn’t a unique move for him during the preseason.

James stayed home Wednesday when the Cavs lost to Washington. He had spent two days in bed battling the bug but arrived in Texas looking refreshed.

He sailed high just 4 minutes into the game to snatch a half-court alley-oop pass from Williams and throw it down. He ran backward with a huge grin after hitting a tough 3-pointer midway through the third quarter, then took a seat for the rest of the night.

The crew of replacement officials called 61 fouls, and the teams combined to shoot 78 free throws.

Richard Jefferson and Manu Ginobili didn’t play for the Spurs. Parker shot 7 of 14 from the field and had seven assists, and George Hill scored 13 points.

Jamario Moon scored 12 points and Russell Robinson had 11 for Cleveland.

James has said he believes he may have gotten the flu from the shot he and his teammates got recently to fight the virus. The Cavs treated James, Jackson and Karl as if they had the H1N1 virus but have only tested positive for Influenza A. The team has not gotten the results to see whether they had H1N1.

Jackson scored four points in 23 minutes and Karl went 1 for 7 from the field, finishing with two points.

Cavs guard Delonte West, who has spent time away from the club this month while dealing with personal and legal issues, was with the team but didn’t play. Brown said he’ll let Cavs general manager Danny Ferry decide when West is ready to return.

West is being treated for bipolar disorder and has pending misdemeanor weapons charges after he was arrested in Maryland carrying three loaded guns.

There is no reason why we can't be a top 5 team in getting to the line.
I'd settle for a little better than the middle of the pack, given what we've come to expect.

The foul line is just such an over-looked aspect of the game, that so many too easily dismiss.

It helps the O, the D, controls tempo, and can change the whole mentality and aggression of the opponent in your favor.

And I'm perfectly aware that these refs border on the verge of abortion, but Hill, Mahinmi, Hairston, and Blair can get to the line in any league on any planet. It's just the way they're built, the way they attack, and a knack you either have or don't.

Manu and RJ are both very adept at getting to the line and I expect Tony to have a little more success now that he has more talent on the floor to keep the opponent off balance; there should be a lot more times where Tony attacks a defense that is on their heels and trying to recover now that there's more weapons to honor. Tim I've never felt got to the line as much as he should, and the rule changes have only made it worse and more noticable with his not so subtle displeasure he displays to refs, but he's still going to put fouls on a team and get to the line at a decent clip.

Like I said before, it's quite the exciting development.

Like I said, I'm not going to kill the guy for it, but he was pretty emphatic with the statement he made to Schoening; it just wasn't all that smart.

I don't mind a setback every now and again -- he's a young, developing player -- but I'm hoping to see a better than 1:1 ratio of good to bad.

    I'm hopeful for a contributor; I'm not looking for a world-beater.

I liked that Bonner and Fin were kept at 15 mins... if that's the plan, there might be hope...

15 mins? try like 15 secs/piece...then there will be hope.

Hairston was a starter the game before and was the only unproven player to get minutes in the first half for this game. It looks like he is in a in-between situation and Spurs' staff isn't sure about what to do with him.

The situation looks clearer for the rest of the unproven players. Blair has earned a spot and the others will be cut, traded or in the doghouse.

On another note, it seems like the only way the Spurs can get some coverage and front page view on nba.com is by playing the Cavs or Lakers. Even then, it says "Cavaliers lose to Spurs" which puts more emphasis on the Cavs losing than the Spurs winning. Bunch of Cavs highlights even though they lost. As always, Spurs are crowned as the most boring team.

I went to the game last night, and these are just some of my thoughts. They aren't too detailed, because I had nose bleed seats behind the backboard where the Spurs bench was. Manu's bald spot is HUGE in person, and I was over a hundred yards away. My girl mentioned rogaine, but I told her that Manu probably tried it, and it didn't do anything.

Dice is a damn pimp. His fade away jays, as well as his stop n' pop jumpers were all smooth as , and he looked great on D. It's funny I didn't think he looked like a player in the media day pics, but seeing him play in a Spurs jersey was awesome. Him not starting over Bonner, a clearly inferior player, was a travesty.

Theo is awesome on D, but damn the range on his jay is like 4 ft. He weak side blocked the out of Big Z, so it's all good.

Balir was too passive for my tastes to start, but once he got going he looked even more stupid, out of his 4 scoring chances, he took it to the paint twice with success, hit a beautiful jumper, and got fouled. If he is in with the 2nd unit, he should make himself an option in the paint every chance. The Cavs bigs could do nothing to contain him. I could have sworn he had more than 2 boards, but maybe the Cavs were making their shots or there were a lot of long bounces when he was in. , I wish I'd seen that Clipper game instead, he got way more minutes then, so he got more and more confident, and almost put the team on his back like in Miami.

Tim is out of shape, and he actually shot worse at the line than The Big Pretzel. , Shaq scored on him all 3 times, but he couldn't score on Matt. His jumper was beautiful though. Don't know his jumper percentage, but I know Dice's, cuz Antonio only shot jays.

Parker was perfect in about every respect, there is nothing more I can say.

Bogans is good on D, but nothing else. He was actually solid on Lebron, despite the fact he gives up more inches and pounds to Lebron than anyone Pop has assigned to Lebron since ever.

Hairston is better than Bogans on D, and he is light years ahead of Bogans on O. His one jumper was smooth, and outside of a rushed 3 he looked great, iirc. He almost dunked, but I guess it's good he didn't, since that would have pissed Pop off (who wasn't even there).

Hill was awesome, but the Spurs need to practice lobs, since the 2 he got the chance for he was bailed out by the zebras, the timing was also way off. But otherwise he was solid on both ends, he just needs to learn how to move the ball around more.

Ian still needs to work on fouling, and read the definition of a charge. Running with someone and then falling to the ground won't even work on the ty refs there are now. Otherwise he was solid. He isn't even proving he is worth 7 mpg, imo. The only big playing worse is Haislip, and he doesn't know the system, as well as having played 4 yrs abroad. Ian is whining about playing like 50 minutes overall in this past summers tourney, concerning his horrible screens.

Haislip, Bonner, Mason, Finley, and Williams really didn't show any reason for them to be on the team, outside of experience with the Spurs system. Since MW and Haislip don't have xp with the Spurs plays and such, they looked even worse.

Mason was by far the most disappointing player of the game. His shots were open as usual, he was just stinking it up. And he still is mediocre on D, he got schooled a couple times by a player Ive never heard of. At least I know he is in a slump, with Bogans I am more concerned.

P.S. After reading my post, I realized I should never EVER do game thoughts. I just jump around too much. But I don't care, I'm too excited (at least I didn't write in poem format)!!!! Outside of Bonner playing, RJ and Manu not playing, and Blair and Hairston not really getting involved in the offense, last night was sweet.

    Appreciate it, Manufan909.

The more first-hand accounts the better, as far as I'm concerned. It allows someone like myself to piecemeal their thoughts and get an overall better read on the team and how they're playing; what one person forgets or doesn't see, another remembers or catches.

Thanks so much for the detailed recap from a spurs' fan perspective, Manufan. Seems a lock that Hairston is the superior player to Bogans. But if RMJ is hitting a sop re slump, maybe having both these guys on the roster isn't such a bad idea.

I'm really now looking forward to seeing McDyess in action. He's playing just how I imagined he would. 2 more friggin weeks... *sigh*

McDyess is all I imagined and more as well. Also, I think Mason was just off. I wonder what his 3 FG% is for preseason?

Not going to make a thread for this, but why are OKC playing in Houston tonight, then flying all the way back to Oklahoma to play the Spurs tomorrow? Surely it would be easier on both teams to just play in San Antonio?
