Parker takes hard fall in Spurs’ win over Hornets
    By Paul J. Weber

Tony Parker scored 17 points before leaving the game after a hard fall and the San Antonio Spurs beat the New Orleans Hornets 113-96 on Wednesday night.

Parker landed with a thud on his right side after slicing between fellow All-Star Chris Paul and Hilton Armstrong for a layup late in the third quarter. He lay scrunched up and wincing for more than a minute before walking back to the bench on his own.

The contact set off heated words between Paul and Spurs newcomer Richard Jefferson, who were both hit with technical fouls at midcourt upon being separated.

Paul led all scorers with 26 points and Emeka Okafor had 18 points and 10 rebounds in his Hornets debut after sitting out the preseason with an injured toe.

Manu Ginobili scored 16 points in his first game healthy for the Spurs since hobbling through last season with bad ankles. Tim Duncan had nine points and 12 rebounds.

Rookie DeJuan Blair, the All-American from Pitt who is becoming more intriguing to Spurs coach Gregg Popovich by the minute after an impressive preseason, had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

David West added 18 points and nine rebounds for New Orleans.

Parker was 6 of 9 from the field and had six assists before his hard landing set off a chorus of gasps at the AT&T Center. Parker had bumped off Armstrong in mid-air while putting up the layup, then fell almost horizontally to the ground.

He stayed sideways on the ground before turning over on his back and catching his breath. He went to the bench with 2:21 left in the third and was done for the night.

Ginobili, a former NBA sixth man of the year, became a starter last year but opened the season back on the bench for the revamped Spurs. Along with Jefferson, the Spurs showed off an overhauled roster that includes veteran Antonio McDyess and Blair.

The summer spending spree put the Spurs over the luxury tax threshold for one of the few times in the Duncan era. The hopeful payoff is a long season of what the Spurs had plenty of against New Orleans: balanced scoring providing an offensive punch that San Antonio sorely lacked last season.

Six players for the Spurs were in double figures. Matt Bonner scored 11 points, and Michael Finley and Roger Mason had 11 apiece.

Jefferson debuted in the starting lineup but struggled, scoring five points on 1 of 7 shooting. McDyess had nine points off the bench.

Poor shooting dug the Hornets in a hole quickly. New Orleans missed 10 consecutive shots over a 6-minute span in the first half while the Spurs rolled to a 16-0 run midway through the second quarter.

Notes: The Spurs rewarded guard George Hill before the game by exercising the option on his contract for next season. Popovich teased Hill as his “favorite player” throughout training camp but said, straight-faced, before the game that Hill has picked up the game after one season as well as Parker did. …The Spurs have beaten New Orleans in nine of the last 10 games in San Antonio.

Back after a year on hiatus. A great start by the team and I like the additions. Hopefully, TD's legs will hold up this season.

I like the technical Jefferson got with the altercation with Paul. That only shows that he's really part of the team. God, seeing Dice and Jefferson in a Spurs uniform feels so surreal

How good was Hill tonight as well? Some very good moments with the highlight being forcing the turn over from Paul and then dunking on the other end on the leak out.

What happened to the defense? NEW orleans shot 50% from the field. The Hornets got all the shots they wanted. They just weren't hitting them early. It's got to get better. And yes, they were scoring off the starters as well as the reserves.

One thing that surprise me about RJ was his passing ability that he showed.

This could be a special season!

Wtf. Of course they weren't hitting shots early. That's because the DEFENSE was good early on. So, no, the Hornets didn't get EVERY shot they wanted. They were struggling to score for most of the game. The game was all but over when they finally started connecting. Jesus, atleast wait a little while longer before calling the defense suspect. The Spurs don't have to be elite defensively the very first game.

LOL Oh noes! The Spurs ended up letting the Hornet reserves score 19 points (most in the latter half of the game) while the Spurs reserves score three times as much!

The defense was great in the 1st half..we held them to 38% IIRC, they weren't getting good shots, there was pressure on the ball, and that was with a lot of mistakes on our end..

The defense got lazy and careless in the 2nd half..

The ability was pretty clear in the 1st half, and that was with Duncan playing with little effort, RJ overplaying too much, Paul making everything he took, and Bonner getting abused by West..

After reading this entire thread, i figured Blair and Manu were dominating the game...

Looked at the boxscore, and freaking TP has 17 points! I didnt think he had even scored from this blog!!
Probably because we expected it from Parker. Manu and Blair were wild cards.

Great game. Tony was solid and so was Hill. When Tony went down, I was glad that we had Hill as an option. The bench ripped apart the Hornets bench. Once the they got up by 20 points, they let off on the defense a bit, but that can be attributed to allowing the new players to learn.
Blair continues to be a monster. Unbelievable for his first game. The guy has no fear. Manu, Hill and Blair together off the bench is just rude to the other teams bench.

While I'm excited about our team and especially what the bench guys did tonight, New Orleans wasn't much of a test. West and Okafer were solid, and Paul was a monster, but the rest of their team is a bunch of scrubs.

Hopefully we can maintain this level of play though so we can keep our guys' minutes down.

Yeah, way to show the Hornets that he wouldn't stand for his teammate falling to the ground awkwardly.

This will be a different story once Scott is fired. It's nice to see him not playing promising rookies for... uh, no reason at all.

RJ was not getting up into CP3's face because of what happned to Parker. He was confronting him becuase CP3 was being a about it.

Agreed that we still have a lot of room to improve, but actually our defense did pretty well, Hornets' shooting percentage went up because Spurs had fixed the game too early. It was not even a close game.
Celtics had a much easier game but they still got excellent defense. That should not be an excuse.

Parker takes hard fall in Spurs’ win over Hornets
    By Paul J. Weber

Other than Tony Parker crashing to the floor, it was everything the revamped San Antonio Spurs wanted for a season opener.

Parker walked back to the bench OK after a hard landing in the third quarter, leaving the game with 17 points but with rookie DeJuan Blair and the Spurs already well in command of the New Orleans Hornets in a 113-96 victory on Wednesday night.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said Parker simply had the wind knocked out of him after falling to the court almost horizontally following a layup. Blair, meanwhile, continues enticing the Spurs after a dominant preseason, getting 14 points and 11 rebounds in his NBA debut.

The Spurs spent atypically lavishly this summer to add veterans Richard Jefferson and Antonio McDyess. But so far, it’s been the former All-America from Pitt getting the most buzz.

“He’s showing really good maturity so far,” Popovich said. “You just have to give him credit. He’s got a great way about him and let the game come to him.”

Chris Paul scored 26 points and got a technical foul along with Jefferson after they met fact-to-face at midcourt following Parker’s hard fall. Both downplayed the exchange after the game, and Paul kept his sense of humor even though New Orleans was never closer than 15 points in the second half.

“We hoped to go 82-0, but we knew it wasn’t too feasible,” Paul said.

Emeka Okafor had 18 points and 10 rebounds in his Hornets debut after sitting out the preseason with an injured toe. He played 29 minutes, shooting 8 of 14 from the floor.

Also re-emerging healthy was Manu Ginobili, who scored 16 points. He hobbled through last season with bad ankles. Tim Duncan had nine points and 12 rebounds.

Parker was 6 of 9 from the field and had six assists before his hard landing set off a chorus of gasps at the AT&T Center. Parker had bumped off Hilton Armstrong in mid-air while putting up the layup, and remained sideways on the ground before turning over on his back and catching his breath.

He went to the bench with 2:21 left in the third and was done for the night. Parker left the locker room without speaking to reporters but appeared fine.

Ginobili, a former NBA sixth man of the year, became a starter last season but opened the season back on the bench for the revamped Spurs.

Hornets coach Byron Scott called Blair “a monster.”

“You know, a 6-5, 6-6 center who comes in and plays 22 minutes and gets 14-11 is pretty impressive,” Scott said. “Especially for a rookie.”

Blair, whose locker is next to Duncan’s, said he’s simply the beneficiary of being on a good team.

“My teammates are taking me under their wing and showing me what to do,” Blair said. “It’s been excellent to have that.”

The summer spending spree put the Spurs over the luxury tax threshold for one of the few times in the Duncan era. The hopeful payoff is a long season of what the Spurs had plenty of against New Orleans: balanced scoring providing an offensive punch that San Antonio sorely lacked last season.

Six players for the Spurs scored in double figures. Matt Bonner and Roger Mason had 11 apiece and Michael Finley had 10.

Popovich teased Hill as his “favorite player” throughout training camp but said, straight-faced, before the game that Hill has picked up the game after one season as well as Parker did. …The Spurs have beaten New Orleans in nine of the last 10 games in San Antonio.
