See...we added Iraqi oil into the world mix and prices are still very volatile to disruptions in production...imagine if that oil had never made it to western markets....I think it's to conceal that the Saudi are having to dig harder and deeper than ever to keep up its share of world production....that makes its oil more expensive to produce..add the devalued dollar and commodity speculation and you have $3.00 gas...

Yeah. The Chinese, the Russians and the Italians get the contracts, and we provide the security. We've got some wildcatters in the de facto Kurdistan, but that's about it.

Meanwhile, the Iranians have their own non-dollar bourse, and the Gulf States are considering a basket to replace the petrodollar.

...as I've mentioned in other posts, you think the EU is gonna go to war to protect the Euro? .... and a basket is a dream....no stability, no military backing

Military might ain't gonna get it done if people think we can't pay back at par. It's all based on our promise to pay, and how much people think it's worth. An army -- even the US Army -- can't change that globally, if our credibility goes down the tubes.

If it's more stable than the US dollar, people will switch. Simple as that.

How well are our imperial exertions keeping the USD afloat right now?

these investors aren't stupid...the U.S. guarantees its interest..would it be better for them to invest in infra-structure in their own countries? probably...but the U.S. is a guaranteed return...the stability in their country?

I'm not so sure it's wise to take this for granted right now.

...the global economy was in near meltdown...still could, but price deflation brought on by decreased world demand has helped the dollar stay afloat....without that deflation, inflation would have killed the value of the dollar...just like you predicted..

Think you made a wrong turn. We were discussing the "guaranteed" return on the US.

...still might....but as the economy gears up for a run (and higher gas prices this summer) I think the likelihood becomes less..

I wish we didn't have to be in Afghanistan. But I honestly think we have to stay there until something good happens, and I don't pretend to know what that is or how long it will take. I fear it will take a very long time.
Afghanistan is far more difficult than Iraq. You're talking about decades of US occupation to establish a peaceful Afghanistan with a legit government. Two things that I'm sure of: Americans don't have the will power to do what it will take in Afghanistan and Americans will punish any president who loses a war. This is why I and some others(whott comes to mind) said early on that Obama had boxed himself in on Afghanistan during the campaign. Now he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Why you even bother to have a political opinion puzzles me. You spend so much of your time and energy to be so ignorant and incorrect that it's almost sad.

As mentioned, the biggest problem in Afghanistan is that the warlords don't consider themselves "Afghans", they consider themself whatever their tribe is. The Iraqis have some sort of an iden y as Iraqis so nationalism might save them. Afghanistan is like a city full of street gangs. They don't like each other, and they damn sure don't like the police.

You mean imposed borders by western nations are not a good thing? I'm shocked.

Al Qaeda is done in Afghanistan. What we're doing is tromping around the kitchen in muddy shoes saying we'll leave once we're done cleaning up the mess.

Great point. For thousands of years these groups have followed the same families. This is their culture. They will not work with a national police.

Al Qaeda if left alone, with the the Taliban could make a united country in south waziristan, east afghan and west pakistan.
