I hate championship or bust Spurs fan. Even if the team isn't really capable of winning a le, I still love seeing playoff Tim Duncan. What you're proposing is an enormous slap in the face to Tim.

Why on Earth would a REAL Spurs fan want them to miss the playoffs? Wow.

what would be the point of tanking for the lotto?

Any 1st round pick they have this summer could very well be dumped by the deadline anyway, either to salary-flush Ian Mahinmi or to get some over-the-hill finished injury prone big man like Brad Miller, Jeff Foster or Marcus Camby.

Maybe some you are okay with 2nd place, 3rd, 4th ,5th ,etc. but for a team that is measured by championships (Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Rockets) the Spurs losing in the first round is as bad as not making the playoffs. We've been lucky in the lottery before. It could happen again. I understand the tone of the message from the creator of this thread. There is only one winner that is remembered. Everyone else is a loser.

The experts are calling this a 2 or 3 player draft. Everyone else is a project, probably long term.

The Spurs have gotten lucky in the lottery, but never THAT lucky. If they just miss the playoffs, their lottery odds are for to get one of those top 2-3 picks. When we landed our two #1 overalls and the #3 overall for Sean, we were TRULY a team and were in the top 5 or 6 for ping pong ball odds. That ain't EVER going to happen with Tim on your team. It's actually impossible to rebuild on the fly with a player like Tim Duncan. He's just too good to get deep enough into the lottery to matter. You REALLY need to suck for 3-4 years in a row to mine some young talent, and maybe catch lightning in a bottle with a huge talent.

Okay, geniuses. Even if the Spurs were to lose out for the rest of the season (an act of collusion the league would never stand for, considering this team's talent), then the Spurs would STILL be middle of the pack as far as worst record is concerned. Teams like the Nets, Timberwolves, and Clippers would STILL end up getting more ping-pong balls and better picks than us. So even if there WAS another Tim waiting in this draft, the Spurs wouldn't get him.

But let me get this straight, brain trust. You want to sacrifice one of Timmy's three remaining seasons on the off-chance that we may get a lottery pick so that we might be able to draft an impact player.

Regardless of the fact that this team spent millions in the offseason to win now, not later.

Regardless of the fact that they Spurs still pulled one of the biggest impact players from the last draft with the 37th pick.

And regardless of the fact that no team is ever guaranteed to win the le. Every year, every team just gets a chance at the ring, and some team's chances may be better than others. But the Spurs still have their chance, and I guarantee you they are going to take a shot at it, even if they are fighting long odds.

Hang this idea up in the Spurs locker room, and imagine what the players would think about it.

If they keep struggling the way they do, why is it worth it going into the playoffs at a low seed knowing that more than likely they'll get bounced right out of the first round. Why not get a lottery pick and use it to get some young talent or use it in a trade package to get someone good? Don't get me wrong, I'm a spurs fan and always will be but I just don't see them turning the corner like in past years. I think they're run is pretty much done and should start looking to rebuild now.
No, I'm not rooting for that...jackass. Why is it worth going into the playoffs even as a low seed? Because once you get into the playoffs, ANYTHING is possible. Ask the #8 seed New York Knicks who made it all the way to the Finals in 99'. And because this team still has Tim mother ing Duncan. And as bad as they have been this year, I will never count out this Spurs team with the core of TD, TP, Manu, and Pop. You gotta believe...you gotta believe.

What people don't seem to get is that it could be 5-10-20 years before the Spurs are in a position to compete for the le again. Given that scenario, it's much better to err on the side of hanging on a little too long rather than rebuilding too soon.

Trust me, there will be plenty of time to rebuild. And it probably will not lead to any more championships.

If NBA teams that were lower seeds ever advanced to the championship then maybe you would be on to something. But this never happens. Being a lower seed is the ultimate act in futility. No where to go and no way to get better.

    Awful thread...
I concur with ElNono completely. I don't think I am a bigger fan than you who think the season is a lost cause. It just goes against the ethics and integrity of the Spurs to not go down unless they're swinging. These guys are champions and whether they win another ring or not it's not going to change that. Do I believe they have a great shot at winning it all this year? Maybe not, with the horrible D they are playing, and perhaps more importantly, TP's plantar fasciitis.
However I will never root for my team to lose

This is the biggest kick in the face, punch in the mouth, bag over the head thread I read today. NO the spurs would not benefit from a draft pick. Their is always that possibility of catching lightning in a bottle, but the difference whether they end up with the 12th to 13th pick, or a 17th to 20th is minimal. The Spurs went all out this summer, going over the luxury tax threshold to put themselves in position to win another championship in the Duncan era. The Spurs aren't going to piss it all away just so they can slide up a few notches in the draft lottery. The spurs still believe their a contender, and as long as the spurs are within sniffing distance, their going to push forward.

Besides, this is not a particularly strong lottery. Any player that the Spurs choose will probably have to be groomed and won't be a huge factor next year.

Oh, I get now. The guy that started this thread was just trying to rile everybody up to bring out our team spirit. Either that or they should try to grow a pair.

The thing people seem to not realize is that none of the other teams in the West have been overwhelming so far, including the Lakers..they've all been inconsistent and they all have holes(obviously LA is still the favorite though)..

The Spurs have been huge underachievers, but if we acquire a legit piece(a big man), there isn't really a reason to believe we can't make the WCF..will we win the le? probably not, but at least if we make the playoffs there's always THE HOPE that Parker/Manu/Jefferson can play like we expect them to and the guys catch fire like Orlando did last year..it's unlikely, but there's a chance on some Lloyd Christmas ..

Tanking to get a lottery pick that more than likely won't be an impact player doesn't really help the Spurs..some people seem to think that "rebuilding" is easy and you just have to tank to do it..I guess this is because the Spurs lucked out with Duncan, but that really is the exception, and not what should be expected..

    Uh, no.

We are only half way through the season and this team could still come together and make waves, even though that seems unlikely right now. We looked about this horrible back in January 2007 and we all know how that ended.

Also, as I see it there's no point in half measures - either we expend all resources towards winning, or we expend all resources towards rebuilding, and since Tim has 2 years left after this it is winning time.
