    Dwyer: George Hill is ‘Overrated’
    by Jesse Blanchard

It may be temporary, and due to injury, but George Hill is a starting NBA point guard much earlier than anticipated. Not bad for another of the Spurs’ “where did he come from” draft picks.

Because he has improved so much from last season to this one, a lot of expectations have been placed on the IUPUI product by fans. But not everyone has been impressed, as you can read in Kelly Dwyer’s Behind the Box Score from yesterday’s game:

George Hill continues to be overrated, but he played … like George Hill. 17 points on 16 shots, four assists.

Granted Hill is actually one of my favorite Spurs, I don't see anyone really overrate him. I like Blair but people do overrate him more than Hill.

Couldn't agree more. Both the yahoo bloggers are absolutely horrible. Not to mention the fact that they're also big time Laker fans.

On a national level, I don't think many people overrate George Hill. He didn't make the sop re team and you never hear about teams trying to fill their point guard void by trading for Hill.

As far as Spurs fans, I can somewhat agree he's overrated. A lot of Spurs fans have him rated correctly but there are some who think he's comparable to Tony Parker -- which he isn't. The truth is he's a smallish shooting guard who can handle the ball, score when he's aggressive and gives a lot of effort on the defensive end. But he's not an elite defender (he can sometimes be very good but he's wildly inconsistent and has bad habits), he's not a good rebounder anymore (he's actually the worst defensive rebounder on the team), he's a sub par passer and playmaker for a point guard (that's being kind) and it's very unlikely he's an All-Star in the making or anything like that.

That said, I think he's a hugely important important piece to this team. I fully support the idea of Hill starting at shooting guard and backing up TP at point (in fact, letting him play that role last year might have given the Spurs a chance against the Mavs in the playoffs). If the Spurs are going to win a championship this season, Hill will be one of the main pieces to the formula.

And as for the pick of Hill, it was simply a great selection by the Spurs front office. As it turns out, Chalmers sucks, Darrell Arthur looks pretty bad, CDR wouldn't be helpful ... basically the FO hit a home run. Great pick and extra impressive that the Spurs located him, scouted him correctly and had the cajones to pick him over so many other big names.

I have always been of the opinion that George is over rated defensively, mainly from Spurs fans, but also around the league. Ive seen a couple of ESPN guys mention his defense and long arms in the same sentence, and i think thats the same take alot of fans here have, long arms = good defense. His biggest problem is he doesnt really move his feet extremely well, which will probably stop him from becoming an elite lock down defender at the PG spot. Having said that, he is a 'good' defender, and has potential to be a 'very good' defender at the PG position - but doesnt have that elite lateral quickness to be elite and shut down the best guards in the league. he has elite up and down athletism, but not laterally.

Apart from that, i dont think he's over rated at all, generally speaking. He is starting to finish well at the basket. He's excellent in transition. He's shooting the 3 at almost 40%. He was always considered a 2 guard in a PG's body coming out of the draft, so i dont think anybody expected elite playmaking from him - but he can improve his decision making.

Overall, for the 26th pick - he really is a mini steal IMO. He's already a top 15 player in that class, maybe even top 10. And all the players people were clamorring for the FO to draft at that pick, have turned out to be ordinary, so it was an excellent pick.

people wouldn't knock on his playmaking skills if people just finished his assists. He makes the right pass most of the time, but usually its rare that his teammates finish.I'm not saying hes the best at playmaking but I think he deserves some recognition.

    Denver 103, San Antonio 89

It wasn't really the absence of Tony Parker(notes). George Hill(notes) continues to be overrated, but he played ... like George Hill. 17 points on 16 shots, four assists. It was Roger Mason(notes) Jr. and Manu Ginobili(notes), combining for 4-17 shooting, that allowed the Spurs to only manage 89 points in an afternoon that saw the Nuggies turn it over on a fifth of their possessions.

I'm not sure, but that indeed could be a typo, couldn't it ?
i mean wouldn't "underrated" make more sense in this sentence ?

anyway, if Hill may have been overrated ONLY HERE ON ST, that's for 2 reasons:

    - the natural tendency of fans to overreact to new young players. You've seen it with Hill, Blair (who are great though), Ian in his few times and a lot more. Some good games and those young guys are seen as saviors or all stars, not a big deal.

    - his position as TP's backup. No need to talk again about the very vocals TP haters. Any praise they made to Hill is a way to bash TP and ask for a trade.

Honestly, considering how low we are in the draft, being able to have guys like Blair and Hill to produce for us is just awesome.

for the spurs to extend their championship window next year, hill will have to develop even faster. with the loss of ginobili as a scorer, spurs need another dynamic scorer to pick up the slack. jefferson obviously isn't cutting it, spurs are way over the cap to sign anyone good, and acquiring a strong scorer via trade is always hard to predict so hill will have to do. my hopes for this year are greatly diminished but for next year, hill will have to mature into a 15-18 pt scorer for the spurs to have any chance of getting to the finals. he doesn't need to be an all star but he needs to become a scorer.
