Another great book.
I bought this book for my stepdad and he loves it. He even got to meet some of the subjects in Fredericksburg some time back.
He served in the Corps for 19 years.
I think my favorite stories of his might be the ones involving his love for Billie Holiday, such as the one in Santa land Diaries where he has a degrading job working as an elf and Santa forces him to sing a Christmas carol to some bratty kid. He eventually gives in and sings Oh Little Town of Bethlehem, but sings it in the style of Billie Holiday making everyone around him uncomfortable. I don't think you can really get the full effect of stuff like that in a book, that's why I have the tapes. He does great impersonations and whenever he sings in that Billie Holiday voice, I just lose it.
Also, his imitations of his redneck brother are hysterical.![]()
also, his stories about his days as a "serious artist" are pretty funny. Especially the performance art phase he went thru !
along those lines (possibly gay, definately weird but creative), Dusty Scott's Pork Tornado blog WAS really funny. But recently, I think he ran out of material and is trying to find jokes in all the wrong places.
So check out his old entries for a laugh. Blog thread I know, but the Sedaris conversation reminded me of him.
I'll check it out. thanks.
