NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks and other teams hoarding salary-cap space got some good news Friday when they were told at the league's Board of Governors meeting that the projected 2010-11 salary cap will be $56.1 million.

That figure was $2 million to $3 million more than most teams had been expecting, and for the Knicks it ensures they have enough cap space this summer to sign two maximum-salary free agents.

"That's a lot of money. That's good," said Knicks president Donnie Walsh, who attended the meeting to learn the results of the Knicks' draft position through a tiebreaker.

Because of the worldwide economic downturn, the league had warned teams last July to expect the salary cap to be significantly lower -- perhaps as low as $51 million.

Other teams that will be positively affected by Friday's news include the Nets, Heat, Wizards, Bulls, Clippers and Timberwolves.

Yeah the cap does, but here's where they will fail

1.) LeBron re-signs with the Cavs
    2) Amare goes to Miami to join Wade
    3) Joe Johnson gets the max from ATL
    4) Bosh goes to the Bulls or the Rockets in a SnT
    5) Gay stays with Memphis

Knicks will end up with some grade B stars and be a mediocre playoff team IMO.

adrian wojnarowski: Salary cap projection of $56.1 million, says one Eastern Conf. exec., "really puts Miami in the driver's seat of free agency this summer."

Heat would be smart to add Johnson and Lee.

    PG: Chalmers
    SG: Wade
    SF: Johnson
    PF: Beasley
    C: Lee

They can draft some additional depth beyond Cook. I can't see Amare turning down the money Phoenix can throw at him. At worst it's a sign-n-trade for Amare, which isn't a bad idea for Miami either. They trade Beasley and a 1st for Amare and they could have enough CAP space to sign Wade, Amare and another MAX contract.

LeBron, Wade, Amare in Miami is possible.

True. Which is why I said to add 10+ for Lee and MAX for Johnson, draft two bigs and that's a quality team this year, and could develop shortly into a top-2 team in the East.
