Gilbert Arenas Released from Halfway House Today
SportingNews
For the past 30 days, Gilbert Arenas has stayed in a D.C.-area halfway house in accordance with his sentence for his felony gun conviction. That was the duration of his sentence, and he was released earlier today.
The Washington Post’s Dan Morse has the details of his stay:
The Wizards star, who pleaded guilty this year in D.C. Superior Court to a felony handgun violation stemming from a locker room incident at Verizon Center, has been serving a 30-day sentence inside the facility, near White Flint mall in Montgomery County. He is scheduled to be released Friday.
Arenas was one of 152 offenders sleeping at the halfway house this week, according to Thursday’s head count. Most have jobs or perform court-ordered community service during the day. Arenas has served as a mentor for juvenile offenders at New Beginnings Youth Development Center in Laurel.
In the evenings, he watches TV in community rooms, plays chess, talks with others in the cafeteria, has family visits and goes out back for pickup basketball games, according to his fellow residents.
Reports have Arenas making his jumpers and also icing his knee after playing, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given his injury history.
All in all, it sounds like a very humbling experience for Arenas, one in which he doesn’t have access to the fully loaded SUVs and other luxuries that have typified his basketball career. He still has a long road back to NBA success—and opposing fans will surely never let him hear the end of his gun troubles—but his release today is another step in the right direction.
Now he must decide his basketball future. The Wizards have expressed interest in bringing him back, and his sizable contract likely precludes the chance of a trade. At the same time, this is a team in transition, and it’s unclear if Arenas can fit into their plans in the same role he occupied before this legal situation unfolded.
Whatever the case, this will remain a story worth following for the foreseeable future. Thankfully, we can now do so on the basketball court instead of the courtroom.

I bet he's gunning for a new lease on life.
And I'm sure he wants to get back on the court and can't wait to shoot again.
