What do you think of wanting the 1920 x 1200 resolution on a 17" laptop?

I'm just not very fond of laptops in general. Whenever I'm on the road I just normally VNC into the office if I need to do something and basically there I have a dual 20" monitor setup at 1680x1050 each so it's either going to scale or scroll.

I would certainly love that kind of res on my iPad though. I do most of my reading/browsing there these days (like this post).

I have little need for a laptop myself. The rare times I travel for work, I just deal with the inconvenience of not having my computer. I am so accustomed to high resolution, I don't want to do with less. I have a hard enough time dealing with the work monitors, at 1280 x 1024. just cannot do much on the screen at a time, and forget the equipment schematics. Have to print them to see them clearly. We have an older tube type at one work station, at 1600 x 1200, but I see the flicker, and it bothers me. I recently gave away two tube monitors at that resolution since I bought my 24" flat screen.

You guys are saying that 1920 x 1200 is a waste of resolution for a 17" screen. If you are incapable of reading that, then how can I expect you to read the Bible, or even a paperback for that matter?

If you can read a paperback, then you can appreciate that resolution on a laptop.

They sell the bible in different sizes. I had 3 for a class I was taking. Also, why read a paperback when you have Kindle of iBooks on the iPad? Or better yet, Audible.com so you can listen to the books while you're on the go? I have so many books I want to read but don't have the time between work and being a single dad with two kids under 5.

Audible would be great to listen to while in the car or at work in the mornings (I go in at 4 am). If the price is right, I might go that route.

Oh, and in case you haven't figured it out by now, I've just been trolling for fun. I really don't give a if you have super eyes or not.

WC, if you're still reading this thread, I've always (mostly) respected you, because unlike most people you at least make an attempt to show your rationale for why you think certain things, and perhaps I just always attributed your never ending arguments to enjoying playing the devil's advocate, and the juxtaposition of points more so than the actual meanings behind statements.

The resolution issue at least deals with laptops as well. I started by saying I would buy a laptop when I could get 1920 x 1200 resolution for under $1000, and end up defending myself.

So let's review:

The physical 33% doesn't matter as long as the pixel count is the same. Sure, there is a practical limit, but going from 24" to 17" with the same resolution doesn't cross that line.

I need the pixel count. 1440 x 900 is unacceptable to me at any size. It will not clearly show the detail of a 17" x 11" do ent with schematics and wiring diagrams. My 24" will display it at 100% size, with room to spare.

A 17" monitor at 1920 x 1200 would simply have smaller pixels, retaining all the detail. My image would no longer be 100% to display the whole page, but the whole page can be read. A 17" x 11" do ent would simply appear at 12" x 7.8", but retain all it's detail. Try putting a full image of a 17" x 11" PDF file on any size 1440 x 900 monitor and see what you get. Even a 1920 x 1080 monitor. It just isn't as legible with less pixels.

An 17" x 11" do ent requires 1632 x 1034 pixels at 96 dpi. You can get this on a 1080p, but not inside an Acrobat reader window, because it uses part of the screen all the way around the do ent, looks like 99 pixels when I look at it in paint. Therefore, I lose resolution with any monitor less than 1143 pixels high. If we use a 1080 monitor, we have 981 usable pixels high after the Acrobat Reader borders. Only 801 pixels for a 900 pixel high monitor. resolution is lost more and more as the pixel count gets smaller.

I looked at you Alienware specs. You have an 11.6" screen, 768 high. If my assumptions and math are correct, your screen is 10.1" x 5.7". To get 1366 x 768, you have 135 dpi. For a 17" screen at 14.4" x 9" to have 1920 x 1200, it would have 133 dpi. Seems like i am asking for fractionally less resolution than you have in the terms of dpi.

I'll bet that Alienware has sweet graphics! You see, I had already considered buying the Alienware 17x a few months ago, but don't need a laptop bad enough to spend that type on money.

The 17.1-inch wide-screen LCD display offers a 1,920x1,200 native resolution, which is what we'd expect from a high-end 17-inch laptop (less expensive desktop replacements can have 1,440x900 displays). The screen looks crisp and bright, and the edge-to-edge glass overlay adds a seamless feel, but it is subject to glare from light sources. We also wouldn't mind seeing Alienware embrace the trend toward 16:9 displays.
