The winter of the Duncan Dynasty
    by Andrew A. McNeill
    48 Minutes of

For as long as I can remember, I started every San Antonio Spurs season with the belief that the team could win the NBA le.

Partly because of my youth — I was in elementary school during the David Robinson-Avery Johnson days. And also because of the quality of the teams, especially the ones Tim Duncan led as I’ve grown into adulthood.

But now, in September 2010, I’ve finally lost that feeling. To me, the San Antonio Spurs are no longer le contenders. Some will scream “blasphemy” and close their browser windows in anger. Others will think “duh” and wonder why it took me so long to open my eyes. But admitting the Spurs’ time has passed ain’t easy.

    Hey 228,

    Where have you been?
Clearly mourning the demise of TD's era...

    Glad to see 228 back.

Sounds a lot like my posts. But again, only time will tell. Spurs do hav a lot to be excited about, even without a le. But a miracle run would be extra sweet.

I'm sticking to my guns. Every team with a legit shot at a le will have to rely on things going well for them and not so well for others to remain in the hunt. Even LA and Miami has their issues. I see the top 5 legit le contenders as such:

    1 LA Lakers
    2 Boston Celtics
    3 Miami Heat
    4 San Antonio Spurs
    5 Orlando Magic

I just do not believe that any other team has all the tools or experience to get to the top . . . not this year. In my opinion.

Regardless, I am already amped up for this season. I still can't believe Tiago is here. Not even considering his awesome contract

To be perfectly honest, I didn't expect the Spurs to win the le with the team they had back in 2007.

The number one team the Mavs got upset in the first round by the Warriors.
The Spurs upset the Suns courtesy of Robert Horry.
The Spurs meet a inexperienced team in the Cavs.

So what did the Spurs do when they got lucky.

The next year they sign Bonner to a multi-year contract and send Scola to a compe or for nothing.

Give me a break. Making up bull player rankings and using that for the sole justification is weak at best.

Most non-knowledgeable basketball fans would have you believe that manu and tim are each playing on one leg and tony is washed up, and that our young guys have no chance at improving. Our top 7 is just as talented, if not more talented, than any other team's top 7. In fact, I think we might have the most talented 4-7 in the entire league. Even beyond our top 7, we have great depth with guys like Garrett Temple and James Anderson and Antonio McDyess.

Wake up people. Spurs are fine and they are le contenders. Look at my thread if you have any doubts.

before looking at "your" thread I thought we are fine. after reading all the clueless nonsense you wrote I do have some doubts. because there is a very good chance things are just the opposite of what you claim.

Well hey the Spurs werent supposed to have a shot in 2003 either...when their bench was "too young" and their starting lineup had question marks all over the place besides TD. You never know...

I disagreed. Andrew is drinking the 4-letter kool aid. That's fine. You can be like Sean Elliott, grow tired of it and bail on the 4-letter or continue to fall in line. Again, there are more Davids than there are Goliaths. My response is there. You can read it if you want.
But, if the Spurs are dead like these haters are saying, then why is there at least 1 national publication that says the Spurs will be in the Conference Finals? IT ain't just certain Spurs fans that see the potential, there are other people who think contending is reality. It can be.

I don't expect a championship this year, like I used to in many previous years. However, I think it's within the realm of possibility, and that's more than blind optimism and homerism. The Spurs still have a ton of talent, and at least three players easily capable of making the All-Star team this year. Not many teams can say that.

That said, the Spurs will need a lot of good breaks, aligning of the stars, and flat out luck to win it this year. They need inspired performances by half their roster, and solid performances from the other half. They need an improvement in both individual and team defense that many doubt they have the personnel to accomplish. They need better chemistry than you would ordinarily expect given the amount of time many of the players have been together.

If it sounds like a tall task, a long shot, that's because it is. But the Spurs are one of about 5-10 teams that have the talent, potential, coaching, and veteran leadership that a championship team needs. The other 20-25 teams would love to be in that situation.

....Now if only the season would start so we can all enjoy it.

I would give the Spurs a 5% chance to win the le, TBH..I have no idea how they would be able to beat Miami..

It won't make watching them any less enjoyable for me though..I'm taking in and enjoying these last few years of Duncan/Parker/Ginobili/Pop, and anything more than I expect is obviously even better..

I will cringe at the sight of Jefferson and Bonner, but whatever, it's too late for that now..

The Spurs, from a talent perspective, should be considered right on par with the second tier of teams that can be considered "contenders." The Lakers and Heat are the most talented teams in the league, but Boston, SA, Dallas, and Orlando are right there in the next tier.

I think any one of those four teams could, if healthy and playing with chemistry (or getting some good breaks), win the le. They could all also be upset by a lesser team if they have injuries, or lack chemistry because players are just coming back from injury, or get a bad matchup.

The Lakers and Heat arent THAT much better, but they have more room for error on a night-in, night-out basis because they have more talent.
