Nuggets coach George Karl was at football practice Wednesday, but that won't get him away from the biggest basketball question in town. Not by a longshot.

So though Karl was a guest of Broncos coach Josh McDaniels at the team's training facility, the conversation inevitably turned to Karl's superstar forward, Carmelo Anthony.

Karl still has not formally spoken with Anthony, as the team attempts to keep the NBA's third-leading scorer a year ago in town. But when he does, Karl will have this message to convey.

"To me, my job is to, anytime I talk to Melo . . . it's to convince him that we won 53 games last year and I think we're very capable of being a lot better than we were last year," Karl told reporters. "Some of the bombs that hit our team injury-wise and my situation, I think we kind of need to stay together, in my opinion. It's pretty easy: Stay together and figure it out. Right now, I don't think Melo is going to be calling me for advice. Fortunately, it's not my job to probably call him to talk about that situation. My job is to talk about basketball."

The Nuggets' media day is Sept. 27. It could be the most-attended such day in team history, given that Anthony may talk at length on the hot subject for just the second time in the offseason.

Karl will be ready to go when preseason practices start, because he has been cleared to coach by doctors after battling throat and neck cancer for more than seven months.

Still, Karl is in the final stages of recovery and he'll build up to the season.
"Realistically, my situation, my doctors said it is 10, 12 months before you're 100 percent," Karl said. "My mouth is probably my only worry about training camp, my voice and how long it will last. It still has an inconsistency. Sometimes it feels good; sometimes it feels crazy.

"But I feel like energy-wise, I've been a director of basketball, not a coach of basketball. I mean, I tell my coaches what to coach, and then I get about an hour and 20 minutes worth of practice. I think I'll be fine."

As much as I love coach Karl and wish him nothing but the best; in the words in Chick Hearn: The chances of him keeping Carmelo are slim and none and slim just left town.

wtf would he want this guy? I can see the owner wanting him to sell ducats & wampum, but, Anthony is a loser. Karl knows this. Sadly this is what happens when cancer comes a knockin'. It flattens you out, compromises you terribly mind & soul.

Karl needs to excuse himself, stop, and make a good fight.
