tbh the colts depend to much on manning to bail them out everytime. even today manning shoulda been picked and then converts a big 4th down and drives for the tying score. about the only thing they ed up was not running more clock. sad that this team is like two quality offensive linemen away from being able to win the super bowl rather easily. if dwight freeney was healthy in the sb last year they would have won and last year's oline was about this bad too.
The Colts didn't seem to want it bad enough last year. Freeney or no Freeney, their demeanor when they took the field said it all. They didn't seem at all pumped up. It was almost as if they didn't realize where they were. That was their downfall, I think.
the colts played well enough to win the super bowl and even with a 50% freeney they still should have won. there are two major things that blocked them from winning that game (inb4 mono reposts the tracy porter video for the 9001st time). first was that they couldn't convert a THIRD AND TWO at the end of the half which gave the ball back to the saints and led to a fg. the second was the onside kick. honestly all you have to do is buy a time machine, go back to that day, and tell caldwell not to put hank baskett on the field to start the 2nd half and the colts probably win that game.
the defense played a little vanilla because of freeney's injury but it was moreso that drew brees was playing checkdown football the whole game spamming bubble screens and in routes out the ass. the defense was just getting owned by saints blockers. there have been a few colts defensemen, prob most importantly robert mathis, who have come forward and said they did not agree with the defensive playcalling in that game.
if anything the super bowl was poorly coached by everyone on the colts staff. that game is the gold standard for indianapolis colts football in the manning era. keep the game close enough and bet your 401k on peyton bailing their asses out.
